Palin is great for the GOP, Giuliani says.

Source: CNN Political Ticker

CNN) – A prominent, socially moderate Republican said Sunday that former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin, who has achieved iconic status with the Republican Party’s conservative base, is an asset to the GOP.

“I think Sarah Palin is great for the Republican Party,” former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani said in an interview that aired on CNN’s State of the Union.

Giuliani said Palin generates a lot of enthusiasm for the party which has struggled to define itself and identify its leading voices after the McCain-Palin ticket lost its White House bid a year ago.

“She gets a tremendous reception even here in Democratic New York,” Giuliani, who hosted Palin at a New York Yankees game, told CNN’s John King.

A ticking clock attached to a mess of wires and dynamite creates tremendous interest. That's the thing about loaded alarms clocks, they go off. Choice one: Run! Choice two: oblivion. "Sarah Palin is great for the Republican Party" ranks right up there with "I am not a crook" and "Read my lips, no new taxes": Rudy Giuliani's epitaph in my humble opinion. You can't turn back teabaggers with herbal tea lite nor even espresso.

The breach is open and Palin is void stuff. (Doctor Who reference for my beloved avian freeper.)

6. But the arithmetic can shift. Huckabee is understood to want the
top job. He appears to have enough support to make it worth his while to run, but perhaps not enough to win nomination. He tried last time and Sam Brownback almost took him out at the knees in Iowa.

And neither charming Huck nor big-bucks Romney could defeat an old fool like John McCain.

It doesn't look as if Huck or Willard will just step aside but were circumstances to conspire to force one or the other out of the nomination race, or if their campaigns cancel each other out, Palin could emerge as a stronger contender.

A good analysis is here:

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/max-blumenthal/how-sarah-palin-made-hers_b_358434.html

Excerpt:

- - -
For the 2010 mid-term elections, Palin's endorsement is already a coveted commodity -- as Mark Kirk's desperate bid to secure it demonstrates. The more she is attacked, the more the Republican base adores her. As she sets out on her book tour, the slings and arrows of outrageous fortune only propel her forward. Her influence on a party largely devoid of leadership is expanding. If she doesn't prove to be the Party's future queen, she may have positioned herself to be its future king-maker -- and potentially its destroyer. You betcha.

18. Nicely put. I do note that GOP Senate candidate Kirk in Illinois is begging
for Palin's endorsement.

This is her big week, described in this morning's NY TIMES as her "second chance for a first impression." It's a unique position she finds herself in in that regard and I wonder if she and her handlers have thought this through.

My guess is they've only thought through the marketing component and still are not savvy enough politically to convert her celebrity into political clout or inevitability for the nomination.

Also it would be very interesting to see a breakdown of support in the 2008 Republican primary vote among McCain, Romney, and Huckabee, and among those, how McCain's supporters would split between just Romney and Huckabee, and then throw Palin into it to see if the numbers shift dramatically.

I think the GOP nom is Huckabee's if he wants it.

4. Paraphrasing Futurama
Campaign Manager: You scored big points tonight, Sarah.

Palin: What are you talking about? They ate me alive out there.

Campaign Manager: Yes, but your body stayed on message. And that message is, "Look at my shiny new body". The Republicans ate it up. You've got real charisma from the neck down.

20. Her resignation mid-way into her first term handed a major point to
any of her GOP rivals, and I imagine they will more than consider using it should she show any kind of electoral surge in the weeks before the Iowa caucus.

She doesn't appear to have done herself many favors with that resignation, except it positioned her for a lot of media attention and revenue-enhancement.

I presume a lot of people felt likewise, which is why it's important not to be dismissive of her public appeal.

23. The media constantly pushes the "Republican rock star" meme:
-Giuliani
-Sarah Palin
-Bobby Jindal
-Joe Wilson
-Liz Cheney
-Newt Gingrich
-Meg Whitman
-Michael Steele

All of them have been described by the media as a "Republican rock star" ... for a few days, when they say something stupid and get in the news. And then they move on to someone else.

The GOP doesn't have a "rising star." They have nobody. Reagan was an actor so he could read his lines decently, throw in a few jokes and do the photo-ops. In other words, he knew how to play for the TV. But now, none of the Repukes can even manage to put on the act, let alone actually govern well.

27. The Republican establishment would love to rehabilitate her
Because she's an empty suit. Ford, Reagan and Bush Jr. were all cut from the same cloth: mediocrities who are coachable, salable and who will do what they are told. They are beating the drum very, very hard for Palin, which I think is a good thing, because she will be overexposed (as in overexposed for who she really is) by the time 2012 rolls around.
