Senate Panel Passes Food Safety Reform Bill
Source: Reuters

A Senate committee passed legislation on Wednesday that would increase government oversight of the U.S. food supply, which has been battered by a series of high-profile recalls that have soured consumer confidence in the food safety system.

The bill would expand Food and Drug Administration oversight of the food supply by giving it the power to order recalls, increase inspection rates and require all facilities to have a food safety plan in place.

The Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee approved the legislation unanimously by a voice vote.

"There are very few things that are as important as ensuring that the food we eat and the food we serve our families is safe for consumption," said Sen. Christopher Dodd.

4. A "Committee" passed legislation????
Is this not likely to be truly newsworthy if the Congress ( both houses) passed the "legislation" and made it into a law?
Or am i missing something about how it works now days?
I always thought "Committees" reported out their version of a proposed law.

6. Poor wording by the article's author.
The article goes on to explain that the House passed a similar version in July, the Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee has now approved this legislation, it now has to go for a Senate vote and then be reconciled with the House version and then -- hopefully -- get passed into law.

Not expected to be gotten to by the Senate until after Christmas, due to the health care bill.
