McCain: 'Grateful' that Palin was VP choice
Source: Wash Times

Former presidential candidate Sen. John McCain said Thursday he has read Sarah Palin's book and has no regrets about picking her as a running mate.

"I felt honored to have Sarah," said Mr. McCain, Arizona Republican. "There's no doubt she energized our party and America. She's doing it today."

His praised came one day after defending top campaign advisers Steve Schmidt and Nicolle Wallace, whom Mrs. Palin criticized in her book, "Going Rogue: An American Life."

Mr. McCain said during the interview Thursday with The Washington Times' "American's Morning News" radio show that Mrs. Palin is a "political force in America."

6. He not only did not want to win, he seems to be passive/aggressive toward the GOP
He really doesn't seem to like much except his comforts. He knows there are a few hoops he has to jump through to maintain those comforts, but he seems sorta snarly about it all.

11. Yep, McCain's primary concern is McCain
So, while Our Sarah was mean to McCain's campaign workers and handlers, McCain doesn't give a rip because she wasn't mean to him. However, should she ever stray over the line and criticize McCain personally, the rictus will turn into the snarl pretty damn quick.

He strikes me as somebody who has consciously decided to throw the baby out with the bathwater, the baby in this case being The United States of America... our country.

Palin basically ended his political career. Maybe he's happy about that, who knows? The guy's as daffy as a loon.

9. Of course he's glad he picked her.
There's no way he was going to win, no matter who he picked - the right dislike him nearly as much as the left does, so all he could really expect was the squishy middle who like to be on the winning side, regardless of their politics, so they were going with Obama. Having picked Palin he can blame his loss on HER and try to have a little credibility in his last years in politics.

19. Agreed
It was just our year. No one could have beaten Obama, not Romney, Huckabee, McCain, or Ron Paul (although that would have made the debates fun to watch at least).

10. He's kind of between a rock and a hard place
The problem is that it reflects on him that he picked Palin. Palin has carefully not bashed McCain, just the people working for him. McCain probably should have simply not commented.

Think of the fact that both Kerry and Gore avoided complaining about their picks - though both likely got less from them than they expected.

12. Every candidate must take ultimate responsibility for their VP Choice and
McCain obviously "admires" the media storm Palin causes. I think dismissing her is very dangerous.

17. That is true
I am not sure McCain admires Palin at this point, but he may feel that praising her reflects better on his choice than stating any reservations with her.

The fact is that Kerry was in a similar situation with Edwards. Now, until 2008, Edwards was not seen as being as bad as Palin, but he actually did not do things the campaign asked him to do, and did things like using his own slogan rather than the campaign's. He also was not the vibrant Edwards of the primaries and his debate was not what his background led people to expect.

It was right though that the Kerrys did not return any of the attacks on them made by the Edwards in 2005 and 2006. Even now when asked about Edwards (in a NYT interview), he mostly said it was tragic for that family.

From all the stories of many campaigns, there is enormous pressure put on the candidate to pick someone powers in the party and media want. We both know that without that pressure, McCain would have picked Lieberman or Graham. I don't know who Kerry would have picked, but it would not have been Edwards, who he was very uncertain about.

22. Thanks for inflicting her on us jerk-off!
I always thought McCain's "maverick" title was always a bunch of bullshit and he's full of shit about this too. He wanted the Lieberman, but was too much of a pussy to go against his handlers. He's running again next year too. Just retire already and live off the beer money, asshole!

28. the "maverick" title was bullshit
I'm quoting one of my friends here, but you don't call yourself a maverick. If someone else wants to call you a maverick, fine. However calling yourself a maverick is like a guy calling himself a ladies man.

Sure, he did himself in, and not just by choosing her. But he can always claim that she was at fault.
