GOP Sen Lugar's Wife Arrested for DUI
Source: Roll Call

Charlene Lugar, wife of Senate Foreign Relations ranking member Dick Lugar (R-Ind.), was arrested Wednesday night for drunken driving after a traffic accident in McLean, Va.

According to a spokesman for the Fairfax County Police Department, “At 6:18 last night one of our patrol officers initiated a traffic stop” of Charlene Lugar at the intersection of Old Dominion Drive and Dominion Reserve Drive in McLean.

Following the stop, Lugar was arrested for driving while intoxicated and taken to the county’s adult detention center where she was processed.

According to a Fairfax County Police spokesman, Lugar was also charged with one count of hit-and-run.

Sen. Lugar issued a statement, saying: "At about 6:30 p.m. last evening, November 18, Mrs. Lugar had a traffic accident in our McLean, Virginia neighborhood. A charge has been filed and a court appearance is scheduled for January. No other persons were in her car or the unattended car she hit. Thankfully, no one was injured. We are deeply sorry and embarrassed that this accident has occurred.”

Charlene Lugar has been released from the county’s detention facility, according to his office.

I guess John Kerry is not the only one with "family" problems today.

1. I'll be fair as I was with Kerry's daughter...
One should know their alcohol limit or simply not drink, BUT, it is increasingly difficult, given the more stringent thresholds in place now-- for small individuals, especially women to drink at all. Lesson to be learned, especially as the thresholds continue to lower.

Given the wreck, it seems she was very lucky, whether alcohol caused the collision or not.

9. Knowing limits is one thing and I agree on the lower thresholds causing
more people to run afoul of these laws - but - it seems that the lady was impaired enough to hit a parked car! I wish they had published what her BA level was

3. I note that Kerry's daughter, unlike Goodwife Lugar, did not cause an accident.

8. I remember hearing a correlation between drunk drivers and time of day
many years ago. Can't remember it exactly, but by 6:30 something like 1/4th of drivers have imbibed.

13. I heard: after 10PM, 30% of drivers on road have been drinking.
Before I retired, I had an hour & 15 minute commute EACH WAY to my job. Sometimes I had to work late. If I worked past 10PM, I would just sleep on the floor of my office, rather than drive home.

I truly loved my job, but finally decided to retire because I had other things I wanted to accomplish before I died, and I DID NOT want to "die in the harness". Luckily, I could retire at 57.

7. This is not equivilent - there is also a hit and run here - I would bet the BAC is over .06
That said, I think Lugar is one of the best Republicans and think that he and the chair of SFRC are doing a fantastic job on the committee.

11. Alcohol abuse is bipartisan
Great no one was hurt. Time of day, 6:18, indicates a problem.
