Polanski granted bail by Swiss court
Source: CNN

(CNN) -- Filmmaker Roman Polanski, who is being held in Switzerland on a U.S. extradition request related to a sex charge, has been granted bail, a Swiss federal police spokesman told CNN Wednesday.

The Oscar-winning director must post bail of 4.5 million Swiss francs ($4.5 million) and remain under house arrest, Falco Galli said.

The Swiss Federal Office of Justice has 10 days to appeal the decision, he said.

Galli could not provide further details, but said Polanski's lawyers have been notified about the development.

13. He will certainly not run, I predict.
Nor will he be extradited to any country/jurisdiction that so selectively applies/doesn't apply its own laws/international laws.

Whiners.

12. It is up to the Swiss justice system................
Many of the same DUers that admonish those on the right for having a holier than thou attitude about how our system is the best come on DU and express the same kind of nonsense.

He is in Swiss custody. The Swiss are not stupid. The decision regarding bail and the corresponding flight risk will be made in accordance with Swiss law and justice.

We are asking others to have confidence in our system to try the 9-11 mastermind and his co-conspirators in New York. I suggest we give the Swiss some credit here.

30. Italy lost that fight when they failed to follow another Treaty, the Status
of Forces Agreement. When they included an active duty military person in the trial - after the US invoked SOFA - then they invalidated their action. In short, they cannot enforce the law by violating the law.

I'm sorry to all the Polanski sympathizers who think it's "mean" to keep such a brilliant man behind bars (Whoopie are you listening?) but he deserves to sit in prison until he is extradited. Why take the chance with that scum bag who has proved he is a flight risk? Just to be nice to him? Didn't he already live on borrowed time and comfort for the last thirty years?

36. Um excuse me for "caring" that a grown man druggged then put his DICK
inside a 13 year old girl, and then fled the country when his sweetheart deal looked like it was going to fall through, thus avoiding his JUST sentence for a charge to which he plead GUILTY. So yeah some people care about that and no amount of, artistic film making will ever obviate the need for punishing a man who, let me repeat it, drugging a 13 year old girl then sticking his dick in every orifice - forcefully.

Here's something to calm you down: the guy's staying in Switzerland and has electronic monitoring. So you'll get your chance to have him die in US prison.

41. how so?
his sentence wasn't particularly long.
there's no reason to believe that he would die while serving it.
he'll also probably ultimately be given credit for his stay in swiss jail, as well as the monitored home-confinement.
by the time it's cleared up- he may not have any sentence left.

43. if he serves ANY time in a california prison...
it will be no more than 2 years.

but- if he is sentenced to a stretch that ends up with him dying in prison...so what? is he somehow above criminal punishment?
he's guilty of at least two fairly serious crimes- rape, & jumping bail(whatever the actual offense is categorized as) is there some extraordinary reason why he shouldn't serve the requisite prison time?

44. How are those things equal?
Unless he dies of old age while in prison, any time he serves will be in protective custody. Can't help it if he dies of old age. He could have avoided that eventuality happening in prison. All he had to do was serve his sentence back in the 70's. He would have been free for 20 years by now, and free of the oh so unfair burdens of being a fugitive living in France making millions:

after RAPING a 13 year old girl. Why is it again you are so sympathetic to a pederast and a rapist?

If he dies in prison it is HIS fault. Not mine or the prison system's.
