Mass Constitutional Congress votes for preliminary ban of gay marriage

The vote went 126-69 for a preliminary vote to adopt an amendment to the Mass. Constitution that says marriage is between a man and woman but allows for civil unions among gays. the final votes will need to come later to send it to Mass. legislative session and then to voters in 2006.

1. This is a compromise but it sounds like a way to sweep it under the rug

No one wants to deal with this and the Mass. Congress thought they may as well play it both ways. But, the outcome is to eliminate the courts from defining marriage. The effect will be to point the finger at same sex couples as being different but with same rights. Straights aree paranoid about the word marriage.

2. Its not over however

if you look at who voted for it many of them are pro-gay marriage. There are still two more procedural votes to come. Most believe it will be there that it will ultimately not pass.

Heres hoping thats the case anyway!

3. Not really a "comprimise" on marriage.

This REVOKES rights that now exist, and substitutes something else. It's too bad. It could be worse, but I really think we can expect better.

I am hopeful that no proposal can win a majority from the legislature on final reading.

... do NOT include the same rights as marriage. I think a lot of folks don't realize this.
