Nicaragua, El Salvador close borders with Honduras
2009-11-29 06:06:21

TEGUCIGALPA, Nov. 28 (Xinhua) -- Nicaragua and El Salvador closed on Saturday their customs posts on the Honduras border and will open them again on Monday to avoid any possible incidents linked to Honduras' Sunday elections, Honduras police officers said.

Nicaragua sealed its El Espino, Guasaule and Las Manos border posts beginning at 6 a.m. local time (1200 GMT), police spokesman Orlin Cerrato told media. El Salvador will do the same thing at noon local time (1800 GMT), he added.

At the same press conference, Rene Maradiaga Panchame, the head of the National Police's General Directorate of Special Investigations, said that Nicaragua had taken the measure "to avoid any possible problems or speculation."

Roberto Micheletti, who became Honduras' president after the June 28 coup, responded to the news by blaming Venezuela's President Hugo Chavez accusing him of trying to apply boycotts to Hondurans "right to be free."

Hondurans are going to the polls amid a crisis that has seen the nation pushed out of the Organization of American States. Only three nations recognize the elections as they are currently configured: the United Sates and its close allies Colombia and Panama.

Zelaya's been back in the country since September 21. He's at the Brazilian embassy in Tegucigalpa.

10. It was pointed out to me recently that since Brazil broke diplomatic relations with Honduras
they technically no longer have an embassy. The interim government in Honduras has brought that up before, and when the new bubba takes office, it may become more prominent.

11. Brazil did not break diplomatic relations with Honduras but with
the de facto government which is why Susan Rice insisted in the Security Council that the embassy be protected and respected.

12. A legal nicety that will erode rapidly.
With the US supporting the election and new government, Zelaya will not be considered president much longer after his term ends. The new government at some point will ask Brazil and other to recognize it or leave.

13. This isn't about Zelaya but about respecting the Honduran electorate.
As for the US supporting the election, all that has done is lower trust in the region.

14. Whos elected representatives tossed Zelaya from office and by overwhelming majority
refused to reinstate him, even as a lame duck. Even though his is the majority party.

Its not nearly as cut and dried as you continue to preach.

6. Zelaya will not leave Honduras.
And, if he did, he would be warmly welcomed by the Salvadorean or Nicaraguan states.

7. Oh yeah like he sneaked into Costa Rica recently?
That evil Zelaya. Sneaking in foreign countries as he's pleased.

Good to have you around to keep an eye on him.
Really, your contribution is appreciated.
Perhaps you could apply for a job at Honduran border control?

9. Dude, not only did he sneak into Costa Rica, he did it with a hostile military bodyguard group.
I hear his wardrobe sucked, though.
