Second wave of swine flu may have peaked
Source: Washington Post

By Rob Stein
Washington Post Staff Writer
Tuesday, December 1, 2009

The level of flu activity across the nation has dropped for the fourth week in a row, federal health officials reported Monday, indicating that the second wave of the swine flu pandemic in the United States has peaked.

While officials warned that the number of people getting infected with the H1N1 virus remains high, and cases could surge again, the extended period of falling activity suggests that the intensity of the outbreak has reached a high.

"We're certainly on the downward slope of the curve," said Thomas Skinner, spokesman for the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in Atlanta.

The CDC noted, however, that 27 deaths from swine flu among people younger than 18 had been confirmed in the most recent week -- the largest one-week tally of pediatric deaths since the pandemic started -- bringing the total to at least 198. About 40 or 50 children usually die from the flu during an entire season.

Skinner, I didn't know you were working for the CDC.

1. This is why I despise the unrec button.
Why unrec this article? Seriously. Why?

15. The interesting point is that 1 minute after the OP posted the 1st response was about an UnRec.
The very first response was not about the importance or interest of the OP, but to complain about an UnRec just a minute after the OP was posted. That is sad.

With this response kicking this thread it is more important than any Rec or UnRec that will be meaningless in 24 hours. In fact, tomorrow I could post again to this thread and bring it near the top of the forum where it can be seen when Rec or UnRec will make no difference.

5. Yeah, but if the purposeless button didn't exist, that wouldn't happen.

6. Let it go. It is here and it is staying. I don't understand why people can't get over it.

16. Are you serious? DU is a message board, it isn't the UN. Any idiot with a keyboard
can get on and post. We aren't doing anything here except shooting the breeze and bullshitting about politics.

Please don't delude yourself into thinking you are doing something so important as to name others that participate as neoFacists. Get a life.
If you want to do some important shit, get off your computer and get on your bike, in your car, hitch a ride, catch the buss, or hit the bricks in your sneakers and get out in the world.

There are people who are starving, hurting, crying, struggling, who could use a voice. You ain't doin nothing to help that here. DU is an echo chamber. That's it. We aren't changing minds. You want to change minds, you need to be elsewhere and I doubt the web is it. You need to be face-to-face.

4. Saw my Doc today. She's had a few swine flu patients,
none hospitalized. She expects 'another' upswing in next week or so, due to Thanksgiving travelers.

7. I am happy to hear it is winding down. Hope it doesn't come back again. Looks like we are smart
enough to wash our hands and to Neti Pot, or whatever it was
we did to overcome it.

8. I so wish I had heard about Neti Pots sooner. Incredible relief
and I have been able to end my use of antihistamines.

12. It's basically a little container that you fill with normal saline solution...
You tip your head, pour it in one nostril, and it comes out the other. It literally rinses out your sinuses. My wife uses one. They are great for people with sinus problems, allergies, etc. You can either buy sterile saline solution, or make your own with water and salt.

14. It rinses out your nasal passages
Use the correct terminology, sir. :) I used the squeeze-bottle version a lot when our house had a lot of fungus in the clammy basement. We ultimately replaced the basement floor.

18. I'm the only member of the IT team at work who has not been out sick with flu symptoms
I'm also the only one who is over 50. Maybe getting that horrible Hong Kong flu back in '68-69 left me with some immunity to this one. I was very, very sick for more than a week.
