Ashcroft remains in intensive care - March 11, 2004 - 4 Hours ago
Lets not take our eyes off the man behind the curtain.

http://www.cnn.com/2004/US/03/11/ashcroft.recovering/

WASHINGTON (CNN) -- Attorney General John Ashcroft remained in intensive care Thursday, and aides said he was gradually recovering from gall bladder surgery performed two days ago.

Physicians at George Washington Medical Center have given no indication when Ashcroft, 61, will be able to go home, but aides said he was not expected to return to work next week.

No appointments are being made for the attorney general for at least the next couple of weeks.

The hospital did not issue a promised formal medical update, but Ashcroft's chief spokesman Mark Corallo said the nation's top legal officer was making progress.

13. NO.
I had laproscopic gall bladder surgery on a Tuesday. I played in a basketball tournament on Saturday. Laproscopic is instant bounceback almost all the time.

If they had to cut him, he should still be in a regular room by now and back to work in 10 days. Even granted that he's 61. The job he usually does is pretty stressful, so he can't be in THAT bad of shape when he's healthy.

Something's up. :tinfoil:

17. But pancreatitis is more serious than cholecystitis.
Edited on Thu Mar-11-04 10:28 PM by Ilsa
He had a nasty infection in the pancreas, not just in the biliary tree. I'm not surprised he's still in the hospital, and maybe in ICU for additional privacy (a cheap shot to the rest of us regular folks).

I don't doubt he's getting extra-special attention and nursing care, though. I saw it all the time on the medical-surgical unit. "Special" people were assigned these larger, more nicely equiped hospital rooms. In one hospital, they had beautiful hardwood floors, one-on-one nursing care, a very homey appearance.

41. Since he's so "special" and needs to be in ICU....
I really hope they don't let such an ill man get up to use the bedside commode.

No, I think he deserves to be straight cathed. And have a rectal bag to boot.

44. That hospital has a special ICU "pod" for VIPs
The four room pod can be closed off for security. That probably has more to do with him being in ICU than his medical condition.

Don't have a link but I think I read about this in the Washington Post.

54. I'm not so sure it's just for privacy
Pancreatitis, whether from gallstone inflammation or too much drinking, is deadly serious. People die from it all the time. I have no doubt that he's in very serious condition. I hope he pulls through okay. I don't wish that horrible disease on even my worst enemies.

I would hate for him to miss the elections.

I heard on the news today that he is considering lifting a ban on America harboring foreign women who have been abused. I think it's nice that he's considering this while in intensive care. (sarcasm?)

...me thinks! He either endured the pain and suffering brought on by years of gallstone attacks hoping and praying that God would eventually heal him, or Ashcroft is just a closet lush. Either way, I'm really sad that he is suffering so.:-(

...that no-talent, low-rent harpie.

Ashcroft is resting in his savior's care. What will be, will be. He's a most fortunate man, to have the best medical care in the world paid for by America's struggling families. What he's enjoying is a New Testament precept -- grace. The meaning of grace is "unmerited favor." Think about it, Malkin.

38. I'm not a doctor, but...
...since I have my own little rock collection, I try to stay informed. I thought it was ominous that they were doing surgery to remove the gall bladder before there was anything less than a full recovery from the pancreatitis; sort of makes me think that it was an emergency measure. The fact that Ashcroft's still in the ICU makes me think that too.

I personally would like to see Ashcroft survive and come away humbled by the experience. Maybe even get some insight into why people need narcotics or medicinal marijuana to deal with chronic pain.

Or maybe he'll learn to walk on water. You never know.

16. Must be nice to actually have medical benefits, huh?
You and I would have not even been able to stay overnight, most likely. Rich people can purchase hospital space whenever they want to. I have often had rich people 'purchase' double rooms for themselves for a month or more, and their private secretaries and other servants would come to service them all day long. Meanwhile, sick people would be turned away because we didn't have beds. We coldly turned out people whose benefits had expired when they were still very sick.

All I can say, is if you get sick and you are a regular or poor joe, make sure you have lots of family/friends that are willing to put their jobs and lives on hold to take care of you.

40. there is a lot of truth
in that statement. Thoughts do affect the cells in our body - gallbladder problems are related to rigidity, anger, etc. It is no coincidence one of the meanings of gall in the dictionary is "bitterness of spirit."

Edited on Fri Mar-12-04 01:07 AM by Enraged_Ape
My Grandma always told me to pray only for that which benefits everyone. Ashcroft's imminent meeting with the Lord is a win-win for him AND us. It is the kind of prayer I know Big John HOPES and WISHES that we all would pray for him, since his love for Jesus is just so...so...big and bountifully...huge and stuff.

43. The suffering that comes with gall bladder disease is
pretty awful, so have no doubt that Asscroft has been in terrible pain. Still, he has the best doctors and medical care money and insurance can buy, something repukes want to flat out deny to the masses.

I heard HHS Secretary Tommy Thompson interviewed on the CBS LA affiliate radio station the other day spewing the repuke party line that universal health care is a bad idea, and that people ought to put some money into "medical savings accounts." Yeah, sure, Tommy. Millions of unemployed people whose benefits have run out, plus all of the people who toil at low wage jobs that offer no health insurance, plus all of the working people who simply can't afford it, have all kinds of money to put away for medical emergencies. These millionaire bastards are so completely clueless. How the F*$@ did we end up with a "Health" and "Human Services" secretary who doesn't give a rat's ass about either?

53. Hah, medical savings -
we managed to raise the kids, send them to college, pay the bills, keep a roof over our heads and keep food on the table, but never, ever had any left over for savings of any kind. We have had four vacations in 40 years, always drove cheap cars, always made fairly decent money and NEVER took time off from work. Now tell me, Mr. Thompson, where do we get the money to save?

The idea is also ridiculous for another reason. If you could save $50,000, one short hospital stay would wipe it out.

49. Medical bills forced us into bankruptcy
last year, before we had our court date the phone rang off the hook, bill collecters wanting money. We didn't have it, after taking care of the basics, there isn't any wiggle room, medical savings? forget you, we ruined our credit. Right now we're trying to get a little 5000.00 dollar loan to buy a used car, the old one is on it's last legs.
It's like running in a fucking circle, we need the car so my wife can go to work, no car, no work, no work, no money. We lose everything and find a nice dry bridge to starve under.
Fuck you johnny crisco, you get the best care around the clock, my wife was booted out as soon as possible, and in days the collectrion calls started.
I hope the son of a bitch lives, long and in constant pain, I hope whatever the slimey bastard has is highly contagious and it spreads to the rest of these corrupt bastards.
