US terrorism warning mistaken: (Australian) Govt | ABC (Australia)

US terrorism warning mistaken: Govt

The Federal Government says the United States Government is correcting an intelligence advisory which warns of a terrorist attack in Australia.

The Government says the intelligence the US refers to does not identify Australia as a target but senior sources say Australia has been identified as a possible point of origin for attacks.

The US has issued a new global terrorism warning to airlines, adding hijacking to the list of potential attacks.

The US Department of Homeland Security has warned the airline industry that the Al Qaeda network is planning new suicide hijackings and bombings in the United States or in other countries, including Australia.

1. Hijackings
There is no way that a hijacking will ever again succeed in America. After what was done on 9/11 and the ordeal of the flight 93 passengers, I am absolutely convinced that any Muslim terrorist who tries to replicate the 9/11 attacks will not only fail, but find himself in for the ass whooping of a lifetime.

3. I don't share your optimism
If you think terrorists will be thwarted by the idea of travelers jumping out of their seats like a posse, you'd better think again.

In December 94, when GIA terrorists from Algeria tried to hijack Air France flight 8969 and crash the plane into the Eiffel Tower in Paris, they screwed up on one vital point--they didn't know how to pilot the aircraft themselves, and they were helpless if they couldn't terrorize the pilot into following their flight plan.

By 9/11, they'd solved that problem by learning to pilot the planes on their own.

I don't believe people who go to these lengths--and who are prepared to die in the commission of their crimes--will back away from a possible fist fight in a jet aisle way.

And I don't think you'll find any informed observer who'd make the remarkable claim--as you do--that no hijacking "will ever again succeed in America." If it were that easy, we would not have outlawed vigilante justice.
