France to bring in bank bonus tax
Source: BBC

French Finance Minister Christine Lagarde says France will introduce a tax on bankers' bonuses similar to the one introduced in the UK. Any bonus above 27,000 euros ($39,000; £24,000) will be taxed at a rate of 50% on payments given out in 2010.

Ms Lagarde told reporters that a bill would be brought before the French parliament in January.

Last week, UK Chancellor Alistair Darling announced a similar measure in his pre-Budget report.

France was at the forefront of calling for action on bankers' pay at the G20 summit earlier this year.

1. but, but, but..... that's socialism
A tax on extravagant bonuses is just what we need. The CEO's would probably double their bonuses to offset the loss, but at least they'd be contributing to the federal budget and help us afford universal health care (OK, we all have our dreams).

6. Bingo!
I have a friend from Germany in a center-right party. I'm an unapologetic liberal, and yet she's to the left of me.
Heck, even Nixon would be to the left of the current leadership of the Democratic (sic) party. It's appalling.

8. Funny you mention Nixon. I was watching a program on C span..........
..........(I think it was C span, and can't remember the program) where one of the persons on the program said sarcastically that the last liberal President was Nixon. I laughed at the time, but then I started thinking about it and thought, wow, that is sickeningly true.

18. Not really. Carter was the first "conservative" Dem elected President.......
........in my lifetime (then came Clinton). I am in no way defending Nixon, but under his admin we got the EPA and state revenue sharing and a few other odds and ends. You have to consider the times also 1968. Next to Johnson he was super conservative, but next to Carter, Clinton and now Obama Nixon was "liberal". He even had a plan for universal healthcare and a guaranteed minimum yearly wage. I did not like Carter at all when he was elected, now he has become a real world leader and moderated quite since he was President. I like and respect him now, but he was crap as President.
