Idaho Mountain ExpressThe U.S.-based terrorist tracking organization, SITE Intelligence Group, said the media arm of of the Afghan Taliban made the announcement Wednesday on their Web site. The AP said the soldier in the video, reportedly titled, "One of Their People Testified," is thought to be Bergdahl, the only U.S. soldier known to be in captivity, although the Taliban did not disclose the American's identity.
The 23-year-old Bergdahl is believed to have been captured by Taliban militants on June 30, 2009, in the eastern province of Paktika near the Pakistan border. Bergdahl's official military status changed from "whereabouts unknown" to "missing/captured" on July 15 after a 28-minute online video showed him sitting cross-legged in front of a low table and a white sheet while being interviewed by his captors. No subsequent videos have been released.
The AP stated it is not publicly known where Bergdahl is being held captive, but it could be Afghanistan or Pakistan.
Bergdahl was raised in Blaine County, near Hailey. He is a member of the 1st Battalion, 501st Parachute Infantry Regiment, 4th Brigade Combat Team, 25th Infantry Division, based at Fort Richardson, Alaska. He entered the Army in June 2008 and went through basic training in Fort Benning, Ga.
