Newark airport's security cameras not recording during Sunday breach
Source: CNN

(CNN) -- Cameras that might have shown the man who walked through security Sunday at Newark, New Jersey, Liberty International Airport were not recording during the incident, a federal official said Tuesday.

Transportation Security Administration spokeswoman Ann Davis said TSA-funded and Port Authority-installed and -operated cameras were running but not recording at the time of the security breach on Sunday evening, which led officials to shut Terminal C for hours and rescreen thousands of passengers.

She said TSA investigators instead scrutinized security tapes recorded by Continental Airlines' cameras in an unsuccessful attempt to identify the individual.

Davis said Continental and TSA/Port Authority have separate sets of cameras at the terminal, but she would not say how many or how long those operated by the Port Authority had not been recording.

1. Shut down the whole system till he comes forward
Since this person is still at large, and I'm not comfortable with the aviation system continuing merrily along.

Asa zero-risk guy, I say shut down Newark and the whole US air transportation system now, before it's too late!

In fact, until this interloper turns himself in, or is apprehended, killed and investigated (I forget, do I have the order right there?) we need a total shutdown of global aviation everywhere.

Yep.

2. The incompetence is staggering.
I hope it's at least a high tech shenanigan by the bad guys. But I doubt it. We really don't have our act together do we?

14. " incompetence" - riiiiiiiiiiight
It's downright uncanny how often security cameras are found to have gone on the fritz whenever something needs to be reviewed.

Damn near 100% of the time.

3. I wonder if people will ever wake up to the fact that the TSA is all about theater and conditioning.

5. Based on the interviewswith the travelling public that NPR aired yesterday,
Edited on Wed Jan-06-10 11:24 AM by Tesha
I'd have to say that the answer to your question
is a resounding "NO!". Now it could be, of course,
that NPR was cherry-picking the audio quotes, but
every one of their respondents seemed willing to
accept any indignity, any intrusion into their privacy
if it was promised to make them one iota safer.

"Fly naked, knocked-out, and shrink-wrapped in
Tyvek with a catheter shoved into me? Well, if it
makes it safer to fly, I guess I'll just have to get
used to that."

8. Yep, pretty much
As someone outside the US, the biggest shock for me in the "war on terror" has been the ease and enthusiasm with which most Americans have embraced the trappings of a police state, and abandoned any pretense to caring about their civil rights.

Before 2001, I would not have thought that possible, and actually did have a pretty high regard for the willingness of Americans to act bravely when faced with a national threat, and to be courageous in defense of their own liberties.

Man, was my confidence misplaced or what...

I have to believe these people are set up to call in. We are getting another issue shoved down our throats.

9. Truly un-fucking-believable!
Should there not be massive firings made public? Where are those responsible for failing to record this alleged breach of security? In fact, if there is to be even a hint of legitimacy for the TSA, the entire staff that manned that part of the airport should be summarily fired. If Obama is truly upset with this breach, he should hold people accountable and in public.

Anything other than mass firings at the TSA gives concrete, absolute proof that the whole fucking thing is a charade.

How in the world can anyone take these people seriously if they cannot even make sure that the cameras are rolling at checkpoints at the airport. This is outrageous on a scale that boggles the mind.

10. I did maintenence on electronic systems at Newark
I can say with authority that the Port Authority is a total clusterfuck. Add to that the airlines implementing remodel and renovation without considering the effect on shared services, it's a wonder anything at the facility still functions. The company I worked for made a fortune off them but most of the work I did was just pissing in the wind.
