PORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti, Jan. 13 (UPI) -- The death toll from Haiti's 7.0 magnitude earthquake is at least 100,000 and could be several times that number, Haitian officials said Wednesday.

Haitian Consul General Felix Augustin said the capital Port-au-Prince "is flattened, CNN reported.

"More than 100,000 are dead," Felix Augustin told reporters.

Haitian Prime Minister Jean-Max Bellerive said it could be much worse, saying several hundred thousand people may have been killed.

5. The highest death toll from an earthquake ever
occurred in China over 450 years ago. The toll was over 800,000 people. Let's hope that Haiti comes nowhere close to breaking that macabre figure.

10. a 7.0 earthquake with many people inside buildings that were in ...
.... many cases not well made could lead to many deaths. Also the loss of medical care buildings
along w/ the deaths of Drs. & Nurses is not good.

11. I read that most of the buildings were poorly made and out
of concrete? The surviving people trapped there, it's impossible to imagine what they're going through .... and with the rain, no power ...... just unreal.

18. It is awful
The reason concrete is so widely used is because of hurricanes.
Unfortunately once you get all that weight moving via a quake, gravity takes over.

12. That's horrible. That's 1% of their population
It's truly a very sad tragedy. I hope many people can be rescued so this nation can move on and start over.
