UN staffers among Haiti dead, casualties likely to rise
Source: BBC

At least 14 UN staff were killed and 56 injured in the earthquake that rocked Haiti, the UN has said, adding that it fears UN casualties will rise further.

Ten Brazilian peacekeepers, three from Jordan and a Haitian staff member were killed, a UN spokeswoman said.

However the UN says it cannot confirm reports that head of mission was among those killed when UN buildings were hit in the capital Port-au-Prince. Haiti's President, Rene Preval, earlier said that Hedi Annabi had died. The UN said it did not yet know of Mr Annabi's fate.

"We've been in touch with the UN mission in Haiti, Minustah, and with the permanent mission of Haiti to the United Nations, and neither has been able to confirm this information," UN peacekeeping spokesman Nicholas Birnback said.
