Bush warns: Watch out for ’shysters’

President George W. Bush is warning Americans not to fall for scams trying to raise money off the disaster in Haiti.

"I need to put a pitch in for the clintonbushhaitifund.org," Bush told NBC's David Gregory. "One of my concerns around any crisis is that shysters show up and take advantage of people's good will and generosity. So for people who want to help, one avenue besides the established NGO's would be to tap on that website and we'll help make sure your money is spent in a transparent accountable way," he said.

Celebrity foundations, credit card companies and Twitter hoaxes have drawn attention away from the efforts of reliable groups like Paul Farmer's Partners in Health, the Dalembert Foundation or Doctors Without Borders whose cargo plane was not allowed to land in Port-au-Prince around the same time Bush was being interviewed this morning.

I used to work for and around lawyers. Some were very good and dedicated, but others were out to see what they could get. In any case, a lot of them burned out.

The legal profession is a very closed club. They, like doctors, will cover for each other.

Cheney - not lawyer

After all the interference by Clinton in Haiti over the NAFTA stuff, and after Bush's shit with Aristide, they both have the fucking nerve to say they give a shit about Haiti. I gave money to MSF (Doctors Without Borders), and their plane was delayed while Dumbya was mumbling on TV. Disgusting.

I have not seen reporting of anything near 11M+ in aid reaching the people of Haiti. This is madness! There must be some accountability! I do not trust those in authority there. The Bush Crime Family.

Huge sums of money for the texts books and materials went to his relatives. It was a scam... the children of our country are the ones who paid.

reality trumps fiction again. can't make it up, no one would believe you. but the universe? satirist sans rival.

People should be encouraged to give money to Haiti despite the appointment of Bush as co-chair with Bill Clinton, his PR flack.

MCC is a worldwide mission/aid organization based in Akron, PA, here in Lancaster County ... they already had operations in Haiti BEFORE the quake, and therefore could be among the first groups to spring into action there. They really do great work (and they live their faith, rather than broadcasting it -- also, the Mennonites are a peace church).

That's where my donation for Haiti is going. They have a long record of putting donations to great use in disaster aress.

I'm not Mennonite ... I don't even consider myself a Christian, technically, and I generally donate money to more secular aid groups when there's a disaster. But MCC is the one church-based organization I'll always trust to do good work with my donation.
