Liberal nomination meeting in B.C. turns nasty - Globe and Mail

Vancouver — Former Chretien cabinet minister Raymond Chan has squeaked through in a fierce battle for the federal Liberal nomination in Richmond, B.C., enabling him to take revenge for a 2000 election defeat by Canadian Alliance candidate Joe Peschisolido, who later defected to the Liberals.
Mr. Chan's victory on Saturday -- by a slim margin of 180 of the roughly 2,600 ballots cast -- came after police were called in to deal with jostling among rival supporters, some of whom resorted to bashing each over the head with their banners.

But with more nasty nomination battles still to come, the infighting within the Liberal Party appears to be far from over.

Hedy Fry, a high-profile Liberal MP, is expected to face a tough fight for the party nomination in the key Vancouver Centre riding.

- The Liberals will need to get their act together very soon, if they have any hopes of another majority victory. Parties divided against themselves do not win elections. Good to see Chan beat out Peschisolido, who was nothing more than a CA turncoat.

Any predictions as to when it will be called?

Now it looks like June 21st, but the situation is too fluid to say with any certainty. The Calgary Herald ran a story last week stating that the election would be held on June 24th. I don't think Martin would want to go to the polls on St. Jean Baptiste day, now, would he?

I am coming back on the 21st of June so I could go from the Airport straight to the voting booth. Do you know the time-line for early voting? This is one election I do not want to miss.

You could always cast an absentee vote, of course.

(for me, anyway:)). I get back in early May and the 10th was cutting it too close. Think I'll vote in my mom's district since I have no home there now *sniff*. That'd be Richmond. See if I can get the NDP to make 'em sweat there...

The more this crap happens, the better it is for democracy as a whole in Canada. One party rule leads, to well, Liberal-style corruption. And the further they shift right, the more corrupt they look and the more Campbell's provincial Libs screw up, the better it is for the NDP!
