Multnomah to continue issuing marriage licenses

PORTLAND — Multnomah County just announced it will continue issuing same-sex marriage licenses despite the attorney general's opinion that the marriages are illegal.

Standing firm by their assessment that barring such marriages is against Oregon's constitution, county officials will allow the marriages to continue.

“Multnomah County will continue to issue marriage licenses to all couples, consistent with the Oregon Constitution, until such time as the Supreme Court of Oregon or the citizens of Oregon dictate another course,” the county commissioners said in a written statement.

Hundreds of supporters and gay couples had lined up this morning awaiting the decision. Some of the couples were hoping to get a marriage license. More than 2,000 have been issued since March 3 when the county started allowing them.
