(Bill) Gates says malaria vaccine could ready in three years
Edited on Mon Jan-25-10 08:22 PM by demoleft
Source: bbc

Microsoft founder Bill Gates has told the BBC that a vaccine for malaria could be just three years away.

Mr Gates is a key campaigner against the disease which kills a million people a year, most of them children.

Since it was formed, his foundation has spent billions of dollars in the fight against malaria.
...
"We have a vaccine that's in the last trial phase - called phase three. A partially effective vaccine could even be available within three years, but a <...> fully effective vaccine will take five to 10 years," he told the BBC World Service's World Today programme.

1. how long will it take the woo woos ...
to decide that the vaccine is dangerous and causes all kinds of conditions that it doesn't really cause?

i'm guessing two years before the vaccine actually exists.

natural news probably already has 50 fake articles typed up and ready to release about it.

4. I'm happy Mr. Gates is doing something meaningful with his money.
and those that think that his intentions are somewhat misguided or meaningless should step up to the plate and do something slightly equal as he has done already.

17. I saw Bill Gates years ago at Comdex in Atlanta, GA
I must have only been 11 years old. He talked about how he had spent the first half of his life making money and was going to spend the rest spending it. He went on to say that he can only drive one care at a time, eat one meal at a time and wear one set of clothes at a time. What impressed me most was his simple and honest humility, in that you can be with richest man on the planet but you are still just the sum total of what resides in your own skin and nothing more.

Just because you are rich and successful, does not mean you cannot care!

5. He could help us all by making his software safe from viruses...
Edited on Mon Jan-25-10 08:48 PM by scentopine
Microsoft software is deliberately porous so they can weave their tentacles in to every aspect of your computing life.

For hackers, its like flies to shit. Fix that and the money we save could pay for health care for every man women and child in this country for years and years.

On the upside, shitty microsoft software has help fuel the linux revolution. This has put pressure on microsoft to be more competitive.

That's the value of a public option.

10. LOL! It's like saying if you don't like chemicals in your air...
don't breath it.

I am constantly scolded by the "new" democrats for not trusting in the "free" market solutions. I admit to losing patience with new democrats who seem unwilling or unable to discuss any complex problem without reducing it to a "free" market analogy.

The problem with your statement is that by the time you read this - the message has quite possibly gone through hundreds or thousands of Microsoft products that your purchasing power has no control over. A virus attack has a multiplier effect on operating costs of each link in the chain.

Your banking information, credit card accounts, the network servers that Target, TJ Max and others use are all supported by Microsoft. I have no choice in these deployments. Should I boycott any business that uses microsoft products? Not to mention I have no choice of software in my place of employment.

Taking your assertion at face value, I don't understand the reliance on the "free market" for solutions to problems created by monopolies. Seems like few people have the brain power or attention span to problem solve beyond their blind faith in the invisible hand.

Microsoft is a monopoly and their products are called out for exclusive use in local, state and federal governments. And symptomatic of their monopoly position is a startling lack of creativity and stability in the products we are required to use.

11. Disagree. My credit card information was hacked from a national
retailer with "secure transactions" using microsoft server and database product.

My response to the "personal responsibility" attack is similar to the "free" market solutions remarks I posted above.

As corporations gain more and more power over our lives the ability of a single individual to "change" things is remote.

Only as a collective group focused on problem recognition and problem solving does anything good happen.

Its sort of like saying AIDS is a disease that people deserve and should not be dealt with as a government priority because it is caused by lifestyle choices.

right now you are making a personal attack using shallow insults. I think I've done a good job of articulating my point of view. You've still got a ways to go.

23. You need to calm down - do you work for microsoft?
Edited on Mon Jan-25-10 10:07 PM by scentopine
Or is this simply how you attack anyone who presents a different point of view?

I won't forget that Mr. Gates led the worlds most aggressive and anti-competitive businesses the world as ever seen. Not even the oil companies managed to pull off what he has.

I won't forget this and am only too happy to remind others regardless of the "charity" work being done here - it pales in comparison to devastation he caused smaller competitors in the software industry.

Ultimately consumers suffer for all the reasons I have mentioned.

Remember you started this by telling me not to buy microsoft products. You could have simply ignored the post - it was fairly innocuous.

You engaged - now you are using the "OP" defense. Pretty shameless.

But you ratcheted things up - and your aggressiveness on this issue seems out of place.

But now that you mention it, I don't think relying on the benevolence of corporate CEOS and their massive wealth makes for good public health policy.

Bill Gates has never, ever, ever, in the entirety of his career ever made a move that didn't put his and his companies best interests over those over every other person on this planet. I have no reason to believe this is any different, but I admire your faith in the purity of the free market.

15. But you have to buy it every 3 years
Even if you live in areas where malaria is eradicated. And you will have to keep getting booster shots on a weekly basis as the vaccine is updated.
