A suicide car bomber has blown up the headquarters of Baghdad's police forensic service this morning, leaving 17 dead and the building in ruins.

Police said that the bomber tried to drive through a police checkpoint. Initial reports that blast walls had succeeded in protecting the criminal evidence offices in Tahariyat Square proved wide of the mark however, as a Reuters photographer at the scene confirmed that the offices were badly damaged.

At least three of the dead were said to be policemen.

"The building collapsed soon after the explosion. Dozens of people usually work in the forensics institute," said an Iraqi official, who declined to be named.

At least five killed, 20 people injured as forensics building destroyed following car bomb attack.

BAGHDAD - A car bomber exploded his vehicle in central Baghdad on Tuesday, killing at least five people and destroying the government's forensics headquarters, an interior ministry official said.

The explosion also injured at least 20 people, with the toll expected to rise as many people were believed to be in the building at the time, the official said.

"The building collapsed soon after the explosion. Dozens of people usually work in the (forensics) institute," he added, speaking on condition of anonymity.

The blast, in Karrada neighbourhood, came a day after three huge and apparently co-ordinated minibus bombs targeted hotels in Baghdad, killing at least 36 people and wounding 71.

6. al jazeera on this:
"At least 18 people have been killed and another 80 injured after a car bomb exploded in central Baghdad.

Police sources told Al Jazeera that the blast, in the Karrada neighbourhood of the Iraqi capital on Tuesday, caused the collapse of a building that belonged to the criminal investigation department of the interior ministry.

Hospital and police officials said the bomber tried to drive through a police checkpoint and the blast walls protecting the offices, which are in Tahariyat Square.

Five of the dead and 25 of those injured worked in the interior ministry building."
