Home Depot to lay off 1,000
Source: AP

NEW YORK (AP) -- Home Depot Inc., the largest U.S. home-improvement retailer, said Tuesday it is laying off 1,000 staffers as it cuts three pilot programs and cuts some support positions.

An internal memo sent to staffers by CEO Frank Blake said about 900 of the cuts stem from consolidating some support functions in its human resources, finance and other divisions.

The rest come from the company closing a small-format pilot store in Wilson, N.C.; a temporary hurricane recovery outlet in Waveland, Miss.; and a clearance outlet in Austell, Ga. Blake said in the memo there were no plans to close any full-size Home Depot stores.

1. not surprising
I was there about a week ago to buy a kitchen faucet. It was like a tomb in there. I almost didnt go in because the parking lot was EMPTY and I thought they were closed.

And their lumber is CRAP.

4. I have 2 HDs within 5 miles of me
Both have been very empty for months now.

Lowe's by contrast is bustling, even midday during the week.

5. We're going to see a lot of this for this first quarter.
Walmart is cutting 11,000 jobs and shutting 10 Sam's stores. The retail sector is contracting big time, and right after the Christmas rush is the best time to do it.

If the president doesn't respond with stimulus II, the recovery (such as it is) may flame out in six months or less.

6. prices out of line
I checked their prices on two kitchen cabinets and they wanted over 1700 for two lousy cabinets.

Oh and this is for cabinets built to their specifications, not mine. I would have to adjust my kitchen cabinetry plans by two inches to accommodate their cabinets.

We just laughed and walked out.

8. Both of my local Home Depot's are ghost towns.
It's uncommon to see more than one checker on duty at any given moment, and they're usually manning the self-check aisle. I'd be shocked if there were more than 5 or 6 employees in the store the last time I was there, and I only saw one other customer in the place.

And I still couldn't get any help when I had a question....

10. "And I still couldn't get any help when I had a question...."
It will become impossible now.

I have walked around stores many times looking for help, never to find any. Then wind up leaving because, I didn't want to put down money on something I wasn't sure would work or not.

I know we are in hard times, but cutting back on customer service doesn't really help anyone.

It's like the chicken or the egg. more service, more happy costumers, more income. But at what point do you reach the point of diminishing returns? Will having more costumer service people create more business when business is off? The regular business model of the past doesn't appear to work any longer.

Even though Home Depot is a massive corporation, I would never want to be a retail owner in todays market.

9. Sad considering I know a few people from the tech industry that were so hungry for any job
that they went to work for Home Depot. Both said they would end up in fast food if Home Depot didn't hire them. And Yesterday my brother who is looking for a job and has been since getting laid of two years ago said he's ready to work fast food as it's better than nothing. So with HD laying off, guess I'm going to know a lot of people working in fast food.

11. The Homeless Depot
could be where many are headed thanks to corporate downsizing and CEO-bonus upsizing.
