Judge Orders 25-Year-Old O'Keefe To Live With His Parents
Justin Elliott | January 28, 2010, 11:12AM

As if James O'Keefe hasn't suffered enough indignity after botching an alleged phone tampering operation at a U.S. senator's office, getting arrested, and being photographed leaving jail, the judge in the case has now ordered that he reside with his parents until the next hearing.

Magistrate Judge Louis Moore made the order Tuesday as part of the conditions of release for O'Keefe, 25. (Read them here)
http://www.talkingpointsmemo.com/documents/2010/01/james-okeefes-conditions-of-release.php?page=1

The young conservative filmmaker is free on $10,000 bond. A preliminary hearing in the case is set for February 13.

It's not clear where O'Keefe, who hasn't said much publicly since getting out jail, is right now. But his father, the elder James O'Keefe, told the AP "I'm confident this was poor judgment ... but not much more." James and Deborah O'Keefe live in New Jersey, the state where Moore ordered the younger O'Keefe to remain while out on bond.

51. His father views this like a fraternity prank...
His father says this is "bad judgment".

Gee, since when is wiretapping a U.S. Senator's office just "boys being boys"?

This story gets more surreal with each story.

I really hate how there are no absolutes, no right or wrong, in this country anymore. Wiretapping
a U.S. Senator's office is now some kind moral gray area. The right wingers are excusing this behavior
and minimizing it. No longer are crimes just crimes. It depends on what political stripe you are and
what the blowhards in right-wing radio have to say about it. Then, this echo chamber becomes part of the
dialog and the debate--as if totally warping any sense of morality--is a legitimate side of a debate.

When this happened in Watergate--at least the seriousness of the crime was acknowledged. No one stood
around, saying that the burglars were right because of their intentions. No one minimized the crime as
a bunch of silly boys doing silly stuff. There was a cover up--but no one was depraved enough to stand
up and aggressively argue that felonies like this are just no big deal.

It really is disgusting.

57. these little thugs are headed for a slap on the wrist
Thought experiment. If this were a bunch of black teenage Acorn activists tampering with a city council's phone lines, they'd be in jail right now, on track for being tried as adults, with bond set in the $100000s. Major media outlets would be trumpeting the horrors of allowing such felons the possibility of committing additional cyber-terrorism in the name of their ghastly liberal activist overlords. "As a society we must be Tough on Crime!"

Instead, they're 20-something "kids" who just made an embarrassing mistake in judgment, and now live with their parents while awaiting a preliminary hearing from a sympathetic GOP-appointed judge. Media's just fine with that. "Just a bunch of unlucky young misguided pranksters."

rich white conservative activists = get out of jail free since their intentions were pure
poor racial minority liberal activists = lock them up to set an example

Tell me I'm wrong about this, please.

have we held anyone responsible? Look at oliver north, negroponte, all those from the Iran-Contra, BCCI--look at *, Cheney and their ilk--see anyone facing any accountability? If your a neo-con, it takes murdering a dozen people on the WH lawn in broad daylight just to get a trial. Of course, then being a neo-con, maybe they can cite "juvenile prank" as an excuse.
