Pentagon to take a year to study revising ‘don’t ask, don’t tell,’ officials say

WASHINGTON - Defense Secretary Robert Gates is promising to try to spare more gay troops from being dismissed from the military while the Pentagon takes a year to study revising its "don't ask, don't tell" policy.

An announcement of the study, expected Tuesday before the Senate Armed Services Committee, marks a measured step toward President Barack Obama's goal of eliminating the military's "don't ask, don't tell" policy, which is based on a 1993 law.

Obama has called on Congress to repeal the law, but Democrats say they want more guidance on how to allow openly gay service members to serve without causing a major upheaval.

The yearlong study could pave the way for the biggest social change to the military since the 1948 executive order for the racial integration of units.

Upheaval? Oh no.. you have to be around gay people. Let's all feel bad for the poor straight military members, whom most of which don't give a fuck whether you are gay or straight as long as you have their back in battle.

Frankly this screams to me of more Republican, Bigot appeasement. Fuck them. I could care less if their 1920s mindsets are thrown into upheaval. Let these good citizens serve their country. And while we're at it, let's try treating them as if they're fucking human beings and give them the same basic rights the rest of us enjoy.

Fewer implies that they will still be going after some people. Does this mean they are only going after the "really, really, like totally obvious" gay people? Will they have some kind of gay-meter to decide whether somebody is too gay to be in the army?

cant believe they are still talking about this, military service can be a shitty job you have to have the right motivation to join and be a team player.

I don't give a fuc what you do in your private time if your motivated troop and got your buddy's back in a fire fight then your ok with me.

They are not giving our professional solders enough credit, sure there will be some assholes in the beginning but vast majority will be fine with it just like when racial integration happened.

I served with many different races, religions and even gay solders as an infantry grunt it did not matter at all.
Now we may have gave each other shit form time to time just like brothers will do, but if you fought one of us you would have to fight us all.

The strategy is plain as day: "Let do a study for year until we're past the mid-terms. That'll keep the gay community quiet and after the year is up we'll find some other way to drag this out".

What garbage. I'm tired of my gay friends being treated like second-class citizens. I lost my best friend ever who drank himself to death because of the intolerance he faced every single day by being gay in a small midwestern town. When is this shit going to stop?
