David Shepardson / Detroit News Washington Bureau

Washington -- U.S. Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood today sharply criticized Toyota Motor Corp.'s handling of two major recalls, saying the government had to force the company into action.

LaHood said the government would continue to closely monitor Toyota.

"We're not finished with Toyota" he said, adding the department is "continuing to review possible defects and monitor the implementation of the recalls."

NHTSA is considering imposing civil penalties on Toyota for its conduct, The Detroit News reported today. A senior Transportation Department official confirmed the report today.

LaHood said government had officials had to push Toyota into action on several occasions.

1. "We're not finished with Toyota"
Interesting.

I wonder at what point it becomes a point of conversation that such comments are being made by people who own two of the competing US auto manufacturers?

2. Toyota keeps lying about the cause of sudden acceleration
in their cars. The only conspiracy going on here is at Toyota headquarters.

5. I have no idea if they're lying or not
I haven't read anyone with a plausible explanation for the phenonmenon... but that isn't the point.

If you ran XYZ Co... how would you feel if your closest competitor (HIJ Corp) was not only your competitor, but also your regulator and could fine you and damage your credibility with your customers?

My point is that it's hard to know who to trust here.

8. The government doesn't need to damage Toyota's credibility at this point
When every car they make is operating abnormally in exactly the same way Toyota has done a fine job of damaging its credibility all by itself.

3. Good.
Corporations should be held accountable for their actions.
Of course I don't honestly think that will start happening regularly any time soon.

4. I have an affected Toyota.
I think this is going to fuck my resale value and I'm pissed. I tell you one thing I'm going to opt out of the class action lawsuits and persue my own claim.

I don't want a "shimmed" accelerator. You "shim" a dresser. You don't "shim" something that can kill you or others.

I can't believe i lost a bet on Toyota. Fucking hell.
