Obama Warns GOP He Will Use Recess Appointments
Edited on Tue Feb-09-10 03:36 PM by Richardo
Source: Huffington Post

In a surprise appearance before the White House press corps on Tuesday, President Barack Obama announced he would consider using recess appointments to get his nominees to their posts if Senate Republicans deny them an up-or-down vote.

<snip>

"In our meeting I asked the congressional leadership to put a stop to these holds in which nominees for critical jobs are denied a vote for month," he said. "Surely we can set aside partisanship and do what's traditionally been done with these nominations."

"If the Senate does not act, and I made this very clear," Obama continued, "I will consider making several recess appointments during the upcoming recess because we can't afford to let politics stand in the way of a well functioning government."

<snip>

Noting the length that some nominations have been held up in Congress as well as the blanket hold that Sen. Richard Shelby (R-Ala.) placed on all presidential nominees last week, Obama called on lawmakers to "get past the tired debates that have plagued our politics."

1. fine by me
Recess appointments are just place-holders but are necessary when there's an opposition party putting too many obstacles in the way for political muscle. Bush used them all the time, turnabout.

21. And by the way, why is he telegraphing what he
hopefully will do? That just gives repugs something else to beat him over the head with.

4. what a difference a few years makes ...
we were lauding Harry Reid in 2007 for having the balls to do what the Repugs will do (and the "liberal media" will most likely focus on, while it pretty much ignored it when Dems were doing it) with political grandstanding ...

7. Oh noes! Republican would never do this!
It is sneaky and it is dishonorable.

http://www.fas.org/sgp/crs/misc/RL33310.pdf

See especially Table 1 (p. 5)

Table 1. Recess Appointments by President George W. Bush to
Full- and Part-Time Positions, January 20, 2001-October 31, 2008
Positions 2001 2002 2003 2004 2005 2006 2007 2008a Total
Full-time 1 19 14 30 8 23 4 0 99
Part-time 0 3 24 15 13 17 0 0 72
Total 1 22 38 45 21 40 4 0 171

and a full list Table 4 (p. 14)

See? Proof that a Republican president would never do anything so under-handed.

Wait...did I read that right?

10. The Master Plan. Make recess appointments to ALL unfilled offices. If they block.
By not recessing. It's health care, health care and more health care. Tell them straight out you will not have a recess until America has health care. You will not leave DC until Health Care is passed or 2012 which ever comes first. Unless Obama is re-elected. Then they will not leave DC until America has health Care or 2016. Which ever comes first. Obama needs to tell them he is prepared to set the Presidential record for most special sessions called. He's tried being nice and he's bipartisan. Now it's to put his foot down and kick butt. Nobody leaves DC until America has health care.

14. Nope, not yet. All we're seeing is what he says he'll do. That seldom translates into action...
If the republicans scream loud enough, he'll be backpedaling by tomorrow.

15. Remember they said bipartisanship was date-rape? That's not good enough for them now, even though
they lost the election. They just want to rape the Democratic Party, but they want the Mace off the table!

31. Will He Do It, Or Will He Just "Consider" Doing It?

I'm sorry, but I've lost faith in Obama's willingness to perform the tough, necessary follow-throughs. No sense in a tentative announcement of this kind, Mr. President; you ought to know by now that it won't get you any points from the Republicans----just DO it.......
