President's visit to Main Line YMCA draws a few protests

About 100 protesters, many of college age and many who said they were from out of state, converged at an intersection barricaded by police about two blocks from the President's first stop, at Spring and Simpson Avenues.

Ardmore resident Carol Strawson held a Mainline mom for Kerry sign and another stating Bring our troops home.

"Some of us are members of the Y, and we were told we couldn't go on Monday, though they didn't say why. We were actually offended that he would use the Y for his political purposes," she said. "I think they should give equal time. I'm a member of the Y, and they didn't ask me."

She said she had heard that the trip was meant to burnish Bush's credentials as a "compassionate conservative," but she was unimpressed. "They call him compassionate, but he doesn't fund anything."
