'Pingpong balls of flame' dropped near West Glacier

By COURTNEY LOWERY
Associated Press Writer

WEST GLACIER -- Firefighters began dropping what one official called "pingpong balls of flame" in front of a growing wildfire Tuesday, hoping to divert it from hundreds of homes and businesses evacuated a day earlier.

Helicopters dropped the first of the fire-starters at about noon, igniting what is expected to be a more than 2,000-acre "burnout" in front of the encroaching 12,150-acre Robert Fire.

"One guy in a helicopter dropping pingpong balls of flame is pretty cool," said Pete Buist, a fire information officer adding, "If we weren't confident, we wouldn't be doing it."

1. This could work
the NY Science Times had an excellent article last week on how the understory burns stopped a fire dead in its tracks in North Carolina.
