'Pingpong balls of flame' dropped near West GlacierBy COURTNEY LOWERY

WEST GLACIER -- Firefighters began dropping what one official called "pingpong balls of flame" in front of a growing wildfire Tuesday, hoping to divert it from hundreds of homes and businesses evacuated a day earlier.
Helicopters dropped the first of the fire-starters at about noon, igniting what is expected to be a more than 2,000-acre "burnout" in front of the encroaching 12,150-acre Robert Fire.
"One guy in a helicopter dropping pingpong balls of flame is pretty cool," said Pete Buist, a fire information officer adding, "If we weren't confident, we wouldn't be doing it."
