Indian state confiscates 'blasphemous' Jesus textbooks
Source: bbc

The government in the Indian state of Meghalaya has confiscated textbooks showing pictures of Jesus Christ holding a cigarette and a can of beer.

The book has been used for primary classes and has caused a furore in the north-eastern state, where more than 70% of the population are Christians.

"We are deeply hurt by the insensitivity of the publisher. How can one show such total disrespect for a religion?" asked Dominic Jala, the Archbishop of Shillong.

"Just think how this would impact on students at such a tender age."

2. Beer has always been a staple...
and we are aware that jesus did drink wine. Probably wasn't Annie Greensprings or Spanada, but it definitely was wine. He probably didn't smoke cigs since they weren't invented yet, but he may have imbibed a bit of hash now and then.

8. I'm not Christian but this is a bit weird. But on seeing the picture -- ROFL!
The way Jesus holds his hands in the original painting, it totally lends itself to this interpretation. But then I go back to the question: What were the publishers thinking?? Then I look at the picture and start laughing again...

9. That's all that offends them?
Jesus being portrayed as a Scandinavian-type with a tie-dyed shirt instead of a Levantine Jew in simple garb
doesn't bother them at all? If you are going to go after some ridiculous aspects of the prtrayal, you might
as well go after all of them, or not bother.

16. Blasphemous, no.
Rude, yes. Funny, yes. In a child's textbook? Stupid to the point of intentional.

18. Jesus drank all the time.
If he were alive today there is no doubt that the cigarette would be a joint, otherwise the photo would be accurate. I'd chill with him. The Jesus of the bible seems like a pretty cool guy.
