Texas Suicide Pilot's Daughter Calls Dad a Hero, IRS Plane Attack 'Inappropriate'
Source: ABC News

Joe Stack's Daughter Samantha Bell: 'Zero Signs' to Father's Rage; Victim's Son Said His Dad's the Real Hero

The daughter of the man who carried out a suicide plane attack against the IRS in Texas said she considered her father a hero for standing up to "the system" but said the attack that killed a government worker and injured 12 was "inappropriate" and "wrong."

"His last actions, the suicide, the catastrophe that caused injuries and death, that was wrong," Samantha Bell, Stack's daughter from his first marriage, told "Good Morning America" in a morning television exclusive telephone interview that aired today. "But if nobody comes out and speaks up on behalf of injustice, then nothing will ever be accomplished. But I do not agree with his last action with what he did. But I do agree about the government."

When "Good Morning America" asked if she considered her father a "hero," Bell, 38, said, "Yes, because now maybe people will listen."

...

Ken Hunter, son of Vernon Hunter, who was killed in the attack, said Stack's not the hero in this situation, but his father is.

"How can you call someone a hero who after he burns down his house, gets into his plane ... and drives it into the building to kill people?" Hunter told "Good Morning America." "My dad Vernon did two tours of duty in Vietnam. My dad's a hero."

33. I continue to be amazed
AT how folks in the money, as these two obviously are, and have been, fail to be able to look at what is left over, instead of the taxes they were supposed to pay. Both the guy in the bulldozer, who bulldozed his third of a million dollar home, and the guy who crashed the plane, seemed to get into trouble on purpose, by not paying taxes.

I continue to believe it's all part of the media brainwashing complex, the intense focus on the slightly more the rich pay in this one, federal income tax, and the lack of focus on how much these folks have left over, after paying taxes. Where is that show, where you compare a 40 hour a week fast food worker's salary leftovers with say, these guys leftovers. I think either one of these fellas might've seen the light, had the focus been more on incomes.

And as far as the guy's business, he's in the party that has helped destroy the demand side and promoted the mega-stores that likely hurt his business. FOX is of course, the worst, but certainly the rest of the media fails to look at the fact that most people are in poverty once the taxes are removed, most people pay more in FICA taxes, even sales taxes, than in federal taxes.

38. Yep - daddy is a fucking terrorist, not a hero. She is confused
about motive with the intent . No doubt she loved him, but her praise is not just misplaced, it's absurd. Whether you are Timothy McVeigh, William Ayers or Joe Stack, you are home-grown terrorists, period.

21. I agree with you- why is it the headline
that anyone thinks he is a hero. The headline smacks of the usual wrong wing rhetoric. I don't care who thinks he is a hero- that person is by association a terrorist.

This glorification of people taking other people's lives/property for a political purpose is the problem. AP should be called out on it.

People can say whatever they want, as long as they aren't calling for a specific act of violence, I would imagine.

7. Not true but
what he did do was become so violent that his wife had to leave the home Wed. night, taking the kid with her. Spent the night at a hotel and came home to a burning house.

The wife had been complaining to her parents that Joe Stack had been having frightening episodes of anger recently.

28. I'd not even think of condoning what her dad did,
But if you think about it, this is a gal simply trying to cope with the ugly reality of what her dad did. Who among us wouldn't have trouble reckoning with some crazy and lethal thing a parent of ours would do. I'd say, talk to this gal in a year or so and see if she feels the same way. Even if she did still sing the same tune a year from now, as long as she doesn't take the same sorta tragic actions her dad did, she'd entitled to speak her mind.

"listen", they are hearing a bunch of bat shit crazy loons that should not be allowed to walk the streets.

17. We drove by the site yesterday, on our way to a party at my sisters house
She lives nearby, and that is our normal and the most logical route to go to her house. In other words, we did not drive out of our way.

We passed by about 3 pm, and there were about 100 people out on the grassy areas of the feeder road on the other side of the freeway from this building. Taking pictures, showing the kids, etc. This is, what, four days after the incident? Seeing the building gave me sort of a creepy feeling, but seeing all those people standing around gawking made me feel even worse.

It's like when someone is killed in a car crash, and they build a "monument" of flowers, balloon, crosses, etc. on the side of the road where the crash happened. That was where the worst moment of that persons life took place, why build a monument to it? Why not go plant a tree or garden someplace where the person spent some of their happiest moments of their life? It seems like our culture is fixated on the gruesome.

Anyway, on the way back home, we had to take another route because you cant even get on the feeder (access road) that goes in front of the builing on the same side of the freeway that the building is on. I guess thats because they were trying to keep the gawkers away, though they only went to the other side of the freeway.

24. Heroes don't make inappropriate and wrong attacks.

People who give their lives making wrong and inappropriate attacks are called terrorists. Specifically, suicide bombers.

Hopefully, there aren't many copy-cats who crave this kind of qualified praise, but I fear that there are.

29. Why does the media keep calling this a suicide?
Suicide is when you blow your brains out in the front seat of your car or slit your wrists in the bath tub. This guy willfully attempted to murder 200 people.

30. Fightin' the system? Like Uncle Jesse and Bo and Luke Duke?
There's a word we've used for people flying planes into buildings before, and the word is not "hero." The word I'd use is "terrorist."

About when, would you say, did our country become a land to celebrate dumbasses?

Maybe we should fix a broken system here at home so that we don't get more people doing the same thing this fellow did.

Cause and effect. Sort of like our military and economic policies in the rest of the word causing us harm.
