Congress asked to go easy on 'friend' Toyota
Source: Financial Times

Not many Japanese companies could persuade 200 American factory workers and small-business owners to plead their case with politicians in Washington.

But that will happen today when workers from Toyota plants across the US and dozens of Toyota dealers lobby on the carmaker's behalf ahead of Congressional hearings into safety problems affecting millions of Toyota vehicles.
...
However, the workers and dealers supporting Toyota are not alone. At least five state governors have also written to the committees involved in the hearings, asking them, in effect, to go easy on Toyota.

Questions surround crash in California involving luxury Toyota brand
BY JUSTIN HYDE
FREE PRESS WASHINGTON STAFF

SANTEE, Calif. – Relatives of the four people who died here last August in a runaway Lexus will this week break a silence they’ve kept since the horrifying wreck, introducing the world to their family and questioning the official verdict on what caused the crash.

The deaths of Mark and Cleofe Saylor, their 13-year-old daughter Mahala and Cleofe’s brother Chris Lastrella triggered the chain of events leading to Toyota recalling more than 8 million vehicles worldwide, along with the two congressional hearings this week.

But the revelations since the crash -- including thousands of sudden acceleration complaints in other Toyota models and new questions about Toyota’s electronic controls -- have caused the family and other people close to the crash to doubt whether only an all-weather mat was to blame, as the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has decided.

“My real belief is that it was more than that – the software or something going on beneath the surface,” said Tim Pestotnik, one of the attorneys for the Saylor family. “The floor mat was only one component."

Some of those questions have arisen because of Mark Saylor -- a 20-year veteran of the California Highway Patrol and a safety inspector. Witnesses said Saylor appeared to be struggling with the Lexus ES 350 sedan at slow speeds well before it launched into an embankment while traveling at least 113 m.p.h.

Take a peek:

When the Big Three and UAW appeared before Congress, the GOPers laughed and ridiculed them.

I want to see similar treatment!

Slimy bastards!

> this is the united states of american (sic) and sometimes we get

Gosh. Did someone draw your attention to a fatal car crash in California?

Is it providing a suitable outflow for the frustration that has built
up over recent years?

Does it distract people from all of the other (higher impact) problems?

Good - the US media wins again!
:patriot:

"sometimes we get pissed off when we are talked down to and lied to"

Yeah, and sometimes it takes you a few decades to realise ...

16. The US going up against Japan at this time

Just because the Japanese are finally making concrete moves towards becoming a fully independent country is truly the death knell of the American dream.

The way the Post-war world was set up is dead,it died in Afghanistan and it was buried in Iraq.

Yes Toyota deserves to pay for this but turning it into a bloody witch hunt smacks of antagonism.
