Army to Oppose Immediate Suspension of Gay Firings
Source: NYTimes

WASHINGTON (AP) -- The Army's top uniformed officer said Tuesday that he has ''serious concerns'' about efforts to overturn a 17-year policy that bans gays from serving openly in the military and supports a yearlong study into the matter before any changes are made.

The carefully crafted comments by Army Chief of Staff Gen. George Casey to the Senate Armed Services Committee indicate reluctance by some within the military's senior ranks to President Barack Obama's plan to repeal ''don't ask, don't tell.''

Obama says the policy is wrongheaded and should change. Defense Secretary Robert Gates agrees but wants to move slowly, and has tasked a lengthy assessment on how to lift the ban without affecting the force.

Casey also said he would oppose legislation being considered by Sen. Carl Levin, the committee's chairman, that would force the military to immediately suspend dismissals. Levin says he wants a moratorium on firings under the law until Congress and the Pentagon can agree on how to repeal the law.

2. Our armed forces are increasingly politically independent
of the civilian government. They should never be allowed to state political opinions or to influence the political debate.

This is a growing danger that should frighten both liberals and conservatives.

4. I agree with this
Especially after his boss (Mullen) has already backed the plan as a good soldier should.

12. The inevitable result
If nothing is done to stop the slide.

In fact, not only is nothing being done, the opposite is happening: glorification of the military and privileging of its opinions over those of the civilian government.

7. The President is powerless. Not like he can do anything when "some" disapprove.
10 USC 12305 - Sec. 12305. Authority of President to suspend certain laws relating to promotion, retirement, and separation

(a) Notwithstanding any other provision of law, during any period members of a reserve component are serving on active duty pursuant to an order to active duty under authority of section 12301, 12302, or 12304 of this title, the President may suspend any provision of law relating to promotion, retirement, or separation applicable to any member of the armed forces who the President determines is essential to the national security of the United States. (b) A suspension made under the authority of subsection (a) shall terminate (1) upon release from active duty of members of the reserve component ordered to active duty under the authority of section 12301, 12302, or 12304 of this title, as the case may be, or (2) at such time as the President determines the circumstances which required the action of ordering members of the reserve component to active duty no longer exist, whichever is earlier. (c) Upon the termination of a suspension made under the authority of subsection (a) of a provision of law otherwise requiring the separation or retirement of officers on active duty because of age, length of service or length of service in grade, or failure of selection for promotion, the Secretary concerned shall extend by up to 90 days the otherwise required separation or retirement date of any officer covered by the suspended provision whose separation or retirement date, but for the suspension, would have been before the date of the termination of the suspension or within 90 days after the date of such termination.

8. All that needs to happen is one thing.
The command in chief only has to speak and everyone in the military must obey without any question.

It really is as simple as that.

Anyone that refuses to obey should be jailed for insubordination.

What is to study?
