Latin America excludes US
Wed, 24 Feb 2010 08:08

Latin American and Caribbean leaders agreed to create a new regional group without the United States and Canada, and called for fresh talks on the sovereignty of the Falklands Islands.

The moves came as initial hopes for improved US-Latin American ties under President Barack Obama have dimmed, and amid divisions over how to handle the aftermath of a military-led coup in Honduras.

The summit of 32 nations meeting expressed full support for Buenos Aires in the Falklands dispute, which has re-ignited in recent days after oil drilling began off the remote, British-controlled southern Atlantic archipelago.

It issued a statement saying it was in the region's interest that the two nations resume talks "in order to find a just, peaceful and definitive solution."

1. Excellent Idea!
This should help them stay the hegemony and take a stand, finally.

I support their efforts simply because the country I live in is not supporting my own efforts or lifestyle, (or those of whom I know) in any way, shape or form.

The playing field being leveled is not great news here, but it pose as a signal of better balance, at the very least ... as one might hope for.

Fasten your seat-belts. Are you ready to look at the World through the eyes, (shudder) of a corporation for a change? I would assume that they don't tend to see it with any sense of patriotism, community, or altruistic concern for their fellows. You don't have to agree with that view, but you might want to see it and understand it before you proceed.

Stop trying to project your own values on "them". You might do this or that, but they do, could, and will. When you think about that and understand your corporate masters, then you can move and act with a better understanding of how it is now. Put aside the years of wonderful, "we care" PR and try to think like the people who run megalithic machines of profit where you are just a number and love is just a commodity. I know, it is horrible, but buy trying to think like them, you will understand them better and I assure you, if you are really human at the core, it will not corrupt you, it will give you insight and strength as it decimates that bubble of naive innocence that was fomented around your current reality. That is your key to understanding and any kind of action that matters if any action or way of being matters at all, now.

2. Wow, a major development!
Edited on Wed Feb-24-10 03:04 AM by Dover

I guess many saw this coming. So much for a trading bloc that would include
all of the Americas, north and south. Not sure what all the implications are for the U.S., but I expect that the new oil wealth in this newly formed southern bloc will be a blessing and a curse. It's still a very volatile region and I'm guessing that the U.S. will work covertly to keep it in an agitated state.

3. ...
Further details of the new mechanism, including its name, were to be decided on at a meeting in Caracas next year.

The announcement came at a summit between the Rio Group and Caribbean Community (Caricom) at this Mexican resort (Cancún).

Summit members also repeated calls for the United States to lift its decades-old sanctions on Cuba.

/... op. cit.

5. the Falklands again?
The Falklands are british and lets leave it at that. They have been a territory for over 150 yrs and frankly the overwhelming majority of the population on the island prefers to keep their british identity instead of becoming argentinian.
