Reid Spars With CEOs, Walks Out Of Meeting

Corporate America descended on Capitol Hill Wednesday morning hoping to ride the small business gravy train that's been gaining steam. Instead, they caught an earful from Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.), who didn't appreciate the message they brought.

CEOs representing 11 major corporations argued that the Democratic emphasis on small businesses missed the important role that Big Business has to play, several people in the meeting told HuffPost.

"The way I heard it was, 'Small business was important, but you have to understand that these companies in the room, we work with thousands and thousands of small businesses around the country, so when we're doing well, they're doing well,'" said Sen. Mark Pryor (D-Ark.).

The meeting was organized by Sen. Debbie Stabenow (D-Mich.), chair of the Democratic Steering Committee, and took place just before Democrats voted on a jobs package that consisted mostly of tax breaks for small businesses.

1. I like what Sen. Jack Reed from RI said:
Sen. Jack Reed (D-R.I.) quipped that he bought the argument that American corporations are good job-creators -- with one caveat: "Yeah, in China."

:rofl:

10. IMHO big business ceo's are fascsist til proven otherwise

These are the guys who are the first to rush for layoffs, cutting off pensions and heath insurance, all for the sake of Wall Street's review of their bottom lines.

Small business less so, it seems to me. More of a human personal relationship at work. PLUS big business CEOs spend tons more money on tax deductible, uncharitable lobbying organizations.

Can somebody tell me why we give them tax deductions for money that essentially bribes our so-called elected representatives?

2. Trust me, when big businesses do well, they don't pass that good fortune on
to small businesses. They work overtime to profit from ALL of their business realtionships, and that means screwing the little guys they do business with along with their customers and employees and investors.

The boards of directors get ALL the goodies.

9. Harry Reid was a boxer.
Reid was not born into a Mormon family and did not join the church until he was a student at Utah State University in Logan. After a rough and tumble upbringing in the mining town of Searchlight, Reid became an amateur boxer and has acknowledged getting "called out" from bars in his youth.

"I am, by nature, somebody that ... I was raised where you settled your differences physically, and I still have a little of that in me and I'm fighting that all the time. I don't want to be mean to people," he said.

12. The List
of those rattling the tin cup for Avarice, Inc.:

John J. Castellani, president of the Business Roundtable, an industry trade group;

David Cote, CEO of Honeywell International;

Jamie Dimon, CEO of JPMorgan Chase;

Michael T. Duke, CEO of Wal-Mart Stores;

William Green, CEO of Accenture;

Jeffrey Immelt, CEO of General Electric Company;

Andrew Liveris, CEO of Dow Chemical Company;

Antonio Perez, CEO of Eastman Kodak Company;

Randall Stephenson, CEO of AT&T; and

Ivan Seidenberg, CEO of Verizon Communications.

Reminds me of when Trump went to Congress and whined about how unfair it was that those over-privileged tribes got to compete with him in the casino business.

Greed sucks. And it never fails to bring out the worst in people.

The problem is the Senate!
Why is it really needed?
The House alone would do much better.
Its easier to "buy" a majority of 60 than a majority of over 400.

15. Big Corporations are considered a national asset until proven otherwise
Which is probably why so many of them have managed to completely destroy America's reputation(see Goldman)while benefiting from its full support.

27. The only reason big business doesn't support single-payer...
is they'll lose their competitive advantage over small business in luring the most talented workers. One of dozens of government interventions these "free marketers" influence to crush small business.

Plus, w/ single-payer, they'll lose their main excuse for moving jobs overseas.

Could that be what all this is about?

Maybe the dems are starting to realize that you can't piss all over your base if you want to stay in power.

26. Hate to say, but I'm starting to wonder if it's all posturing. Like,
Edited on Thu Feb-25-10 03:32 AM by snot
the Dems spend most of their time negotiating who's going to get to act like they care about us, taking into account who's up for re-election. Like, maybe they agreed Obama could vote against the Iraq invasion, bec. they knew it was going to pass anyway, and it would keep his nose clean in case that turned out to matter in the next election (it was, in fact, crucial for me).

Like, maybe they're letting Grayson shoot his mouth off now for the same reason -- so that, in case it turns out the public gets really pissed at the lack of change, they'll have a candidate they can sell as a true populist. Then if he makes it in, they'll shorten his chain.

I hope that's all way wrong. But it seems to fit recent history as well or better than more optimistic interpretations.
