Bunning holds floor: 'Tough s--t'
Source: Politico

Senate Democrats spent Thursday night hammering away at Sen. Jim Bunning (R-Ky.) for single-handedly holding up action in the upper chamber – but he blurted out a message to one of them on the Senate floor: “Tough s—t.”

In an unusual display in the normally sleepy chamber, Bunning – without the support of GOP leadership – has blocked efforts to quickly approve a series of extensions to measures that would otherwise expire Sunday, including unemployment insurance and the Cobra program that allows people who lose their health benefits to continue getting coverage.

(snip)

In a colloquy with Senate Majority Whip Dick Durbin (D-Ill.), Sen. Jeff Merkley, a freshman Democrat from Oregon, was pleading for Bunning to drop his objection, when the Kentucky Republican got fed up.

“Tough s—t,” Bunning said as he was seated in the back row, overheard by the floor staff and others in attendance.

I just wish the media had the honesty to report this stuff. But they especially CNN ( I don't consider Fox the media they are a 24/7 republican infomerical channel)hide these comments from the public. They are afraid the public will get fed up with the republicans and their corporate masters might fire the whole lot of them.

Bunning got forced out by the GOP bigwigs against his will by cutting off most of his campaign funding. He swore to get even. How better to ensure the GOP gets the buttsechs than by associating the Republicans with ruining millions of people's outlook RE healthcare and income?

3. Unemployment in KY is over 10 percent.
And this asswipe wants to block unemployment and COBRA extensions?

Senator Bunning, do you have ANY idea how it feels to be long-term unemployed with NO job prospects despite all efforts? No, of course not. Why should he care? He has a job & plenty of money!

All he has to say is "Tough shit" to the long-term unemployed? I realize Bunning is retiring & divorced from reality, but the Senate has to find some way to override this stupidity, NOW.

4. Dems need to blast this out to the public. MESSAGE MESSAGE MESSAGE.
Dems need to get their messaging right. This is a perfect example of something done by this PUKE which can help SCREW the GOP in to electoral doom. They need to CEMENT the badge of ANTI-MIDDLE CLASS CORPORATE OBSTRUCTIONIST to the faces of the GOP scumbags.

Same on everything else. Take the health bill apart, and the public, as Pelosi said, LOVES its PIECES when polled. The Dems need to MESSAGE the merits of the bill better. THIS is where they have failed.

50. It ain't a winning style, that's sure.
Americans love high adrenalin sports like racing, wrestling, hockey and football. That being said.

Our representatives prefer to forfeit the match than to get mixed up in an ugly fight.

When they take the safe way out we feel let down.
We don't want them to just show up. We want them to represent us in the fight.

109. It is the fault of the "take the high road" attitude.
"We need to be better than them."
"We can't stoop to their level."

As I said in a previous post on this topic, the Republicans are the political equivalent of schoolyard bullies. They see the Democrats' "ignore it and the bullies will get bored and go away" attitude as a weakness, a thing to be exploited. Meanwhile, our clueless Democratic Mommies and Daddies keep telling us that we need to appear to be better than that. We can't "be like them".

The problem is, giving back the same is the only thing bullies ever understand. They won't ever "get it" until we do "stoop to their level". Here's what I'd like to see:

I want to see the Democrats start making up lies out of whole cloth about specific Republicans as well as the party in general. I want to taint every Republican member of Congress, even the so-called "reasonable" ones, with the broadest brush possible, and I want to see even the reasonable ones tainted with the worst of the behavior their fellow party members express. I want to see Democrats use each and every parliamentary tactic in the book against the Republicans, even if they don't deserve it. I want to see Democrats use those tactics over Republicans' hairstyles, shirt weave, and tie color if necessary.

I want to see our party lie about Republicans' proposed legislation. I want piles, heaping piles of stinking falsehoods that cannot be proven one way or the other, I want outrageous political ads that don't air during campaign season, and I want no apologies whatever. If they do find themselves forced apologize, I want a non-apology along the lines of "I'm sorry you're offended, but the truth is..." and then a repeat of the lies for which they were called upon to apologize in the first place.

In short, I want to give the Republican Party every last least littlest thing they've given us over the past eight plus years, I want our party to be merciless about it, and I do not want them to back down. The Republican Party is a party of bullies and fearmongers, and it is time and way, way past time that we started treating them in the only way bullies of their ilk understand.

The Republicans are bullies. They deserve the same treatment. No more "high road". No more "we're better". NO MORE MISTER NICE GUY. I want our party to, metaphorically speaking, clock the Republicans hard enough in the face that they come up spitting blood and teeth, and if they don't get up, I want our party to kick them while they're down. If we do that, the Republicans will back down and learn their place as the minority party, but that won't happen unless and until we start treating them in the same way they've treated us for so very long.

Nothing less will do the job.

8. This story is getting out there.
Bunning wants to drain stimulus funds to pay for unemployment compensation and Cobra benefits, and he's blocking the legislation because he can't have it his way. Bunning yelled obscenities at other Senators while Bob Corker complained about how mean Democrats were to fight the filibuster because it was keeping the elderly Bunning up so late.

But cooler heads prevailed, and just before midnight Senate Democrats gave up on a potential all night session, ensuring Bunning will get his much needed rest. I'm sure he will sleep soundly in the satisfaction of having cut off people's unemployment checks and Cobra health benefits. I'm glad the Senate decided not to be so heartless.

164. Bunning complains of missing UK game while blocking jobless benefits
Kentucky.com Lexington Herald-Leader

Late Thursday night and again Friday morning, Bunning single-handedly blocked a 30-day extension of unemployment benefits and health insurance payments for more than 1 million jobless Americans over concerns about the federal deficit.

Along the way, he complained of having to miss the University of Kentucky's basketball game against South Carolina and reportedly responded to a Democrat's complaints with "tough s---."

<snip>

After Democrats spent several hours urging Bunning to reconsider his objection Thursday night, Bunning complained just before midnight that he had been forced to miss UK's game against South Carolina.

"We weren't going to stand around for three and a half hours debating the issue," he said. "But I want to assure the people who have watched this thing until a quarter of 12, I have missed the Kentucky-South Carolina game that started at 9 o'clock. It is the only redeeming chance we had to beat South Carolina, since they are the only team that has beat Kentucky this year."

At another point, Bunning responded to a plea by Sen. Jeff Merkley, D-Ore., to end his objection with "tough s---," according to Politico, a Washington-based political publication.

106. Thanks.
One often overlooked facet of the stimulus package is COBRA payments. The former employer must pay 65 percent of the premium, which makes my health insurance cost about as much as it did when I was employed. Congress extended this benefit in December of 2009, so my COBRA will cost the same until the end of January 2011. That's something to be thankful for, although I hope to be employed far sooner.

133. Just an idea to help you with some money.....
start some organic plants right now :)....
People will be trying to grow gardens...so plants will sell well.
Its not much but last year I was happy to move a whole ton of organic plants in a yard sale :)..and was suprised at the reaction.
I have already started some for this year too...and by some I mean this year I am potting up a few hundred :)
I am also buying some chicks this year and raising some hens to sell for layers, fryers and their eggs too.
I am lucky I live in the county where I can do that still but not sure how long that will happen.
Another thing that sells well on ebay are larger well made and gently used clothing for men and women and baby clothes.
Good luck everyone in finding a way to make your own business...because to just look for someone else right now to hire you isnt going to work too well. But if you can figure out something people will need during tough times..you might have a shot at starting something that will see you through.

Good luck in your job hunting.

14. There are a lot of Republicans without jobs right now. And Independents.
The message this sends to them is: The GOP doesn't care about you. We don't care if your lose your health coverage or unemployment.

The Republicans created this mess, and now they are acting like spoiled children and preventing adults from taking steps to help until the economy improves.

Not much motivation to get out and vote in November. Hopefully, Republicans will stay home in droves and Independents will vote Democratic since the Dems are trying to help.

26. As a KY resident who is unemployed...
and whose benefits expire on Sunday, I would love to have a "chat" with Mr. Bunning. How the people of this state ever elected the bastard is beyond me.

I do believe that this is another political move by McConnell, although it is reported here that he and Bunning despise each other, this smacks of Mitch putting him up to this so that at the last moment, he and the GOP can save unemployment benefits. I suppose after having their asses handed to them in two meetings with the president, this is all they have. But let me tell you, I am one of those statistics and from this side, it is very scary.

63. Thank you...
I have already called McConnell's office, Bunning's office, and both Democratic candidates for the senate as well as emailed Rachel, the local newspaper and the state Democratic party.

As for a coordinated effort, it might not be but it wouldn't surprise me. McConnell is ruthless but a cunning politician. I wouldn't put anything past him.

The other side, Bunning is an idiot; he may be acting alone but McConnell hasn't attempted to rein him in yet.

With each passing moment, the GOP continues to prove how they could care less about the people.

Again thanks for your sympathy, we could use it, but mostly we could use those benefits.

Bunning is the perfect choice to be the "fall guy" for this: he's not running again and has a reputation for being difficult, so he has nothing to lose!

The GOP is going to make it as difficult as possible for the Dems to pass extended UI benefits because the Dems have more at stake in the next election.

How about that? The democrats may just be clumsy enough to keep their majorities and the pukes may be ignorant enough to further erode their minority. This is the shit they should be clubbing them over the head with over and over again. Five years ago if a democrat had held up a piece of legislation of this importance for say "the troops" we would be viewing it on a loop on cable news. We should be seeing our leadership out denouncing this behavior today but we won't.

the man was as arrogant and petulant as I have seen from any R. Dick Durbin fought unsuccessfully along with multiple other Dems pleading for sanity. He was pissed at Harry Reid "ramming through" the "partisan" jobs bill. That was it. Now people across the country will, for a short time, not get unemployment benefits.

The Senate is indeed broken.

39. If they were so inclined.
They could pass a bill that ties these two extensions to actual unemployment numbers.

If a state's unemployment level reaches 10% or greater, benefits would be mandated with no expiration until said states employment figures are bettered for more than three consecutive months.

Too easy, right?

The country's in bad shape right now in the employment arena. Dire need times should not allow for grand-standing.

There should be some decorum in which all are expected to soberly and timely act on an urgent matter.
Since there is no such propriety, we should have standing bills on all emergency acts so that no discussion is needed.

Of course that would be legislating themselves out of a job, and for some, a stage.
We are doomed to accepting half measures because they don't want to automate our system at all. They want to keep absolute control on every knob.

I wish these temper tantrums would cease!

and the rates they pay should go UP and UP until the unemployment figures go down --

49. Looks like the asshat isn't even running again.
Get this:

Bunning, 78, a former Major League Baseball pitcher who is in the Hall of Fame, is considered one of the more eccentric members of the Senate. He doesn’t mingle much with his colleagues, can be gruff and rarely talks to the press. For months last year, he insisted he was running for re-election but found no support from McConnell and other top Republicans – and sharply criticized his Kentucky counterpart after he couldn’t raise the funds to mount a serious bid. Bunning ultimately decided to retire at the end of the year.

On the floor Thursday, Bunning complained about how the measures aren’t adequately paid for. And he criticized Reid for killing a bipartisan Finance Committee bill to address the unemployment rate and for “jamming” through other bills that he said would amount to a frivolous increase in spending.

In his exchanges with Democrats, Bunning has repeatedly referred to President Barack Obama as “your president.”

He's an all-too-typical story of how Republicans get elected to office. Live off your glory days as a jock or Hollywood celebrity and get elected. Some examples:

Ronald Reagan
Arnold Schwarznegger
Sony Bono
Jack Kemp
Steve Largent
JC Watts
Tom Osborne
Jim Bunning

It's all a ploy to take away the press for the Failure of the Republicans at the Health Summit. It's to trick the press to NOT Cover HCR so it doesn't gain momentum. He is safe for re-election in Kentucky so he can hold up the bill as long as he wants.

Instead of complaining here email the press on the ploy. Send money to the Kentucky democratic party. Call your senator.

Instead of complaining and whining about the scumbag, why don't all of you do what I just did? I went over to his web site and sent him a 'love' letter which told him exactly what I feel about the subhuman he really is. The site is:

129. Excuse me...
Please, I am one of the unemployed who happens to live in KY...this had nothing to do with the location of the senator it has to do with the politics of the senator. Am I to assume that if Brown of MA had done this you would have been OK with it since he's in the Northeast? This affects everyone across the nation and to use your bias against the South to explain Bunning's actions is ridiculous.

98. This could be a turning point . . .

To call for reigning in government spending and cutting taxes are good general principles for winning votes. To actually obstruct people getting their unemployment checks in this economy, though, where people will then face 3rd world hardship? It's a loser. Just like cutting Medicare is a political loser.

I don't know what I'm going to do. I've never seen it so bad. I'm 52 and have never had a problem finding work in my entire life, but I can't find anything now. I'm not sure if it's my age or just a horrible job market or a combination of both. I don't know if I'll be any good at taking up a life of crime either.

I'll bet he wouldn't have a problem passing a tax cut for dead millionaires though.

165. Tough Shit, America
Edited on Sat Feb-27-10 06:12 AM by Kumbricia
The Corporatist Plan for Destroying America (abbreviated):

1. Conservatives (of both parties) support polices that ship middle class jobs overseas so that the financial sector can make more money

2. Conservatives cut taxes for the rich and shred the safety net that keeps people afloat in bad times

3. Conservatives stop regulating the financial sector

4. The Financial Sector f***ks up (and gets rich doing it) and takes the rest of the increasingly impoverished economy with it

5. The Government gives public money to private banks so that CEOs can have million dollar bonuses for their good work killing the economy

6. Millions who did NOT cause the recession are left unemployed or underemployed, living on crumbs

7. The Conservatives sweep away the crumbs

and I guess 8, 9 and so on are still to come - if the Corporatists get their way...excess labor either ends up homeless, forced to emigrate or dies from lack of access to medical care, or resorts to crime and is then incarcerated, or - and I'm sure this will be my own fate - falls back into permanent debt and poverty, ruins their credit and spends the rest of their life scraping by on bad jobs with no benefits and no rights, with no access to further education, borrowing money at double-digit interest if they even manage to qualify for loans, and dies prematurely. Meanwhile the lot of the bottom of the barrel is scaring the hell out of everyone else...who - with generous assistance from right-wing media propaganda and all the "free speech" money can buy - blame the situation on the incumbants and vote the oppressors back into power - who then continue their agenda to turn America into a 21st century feudal society.

I probably have no reason to hate Bunning more than any of the hundreds or thousands who are deliberately tearing down institutions that benefit the middle and working classes since the Great Depression, who hate the ideal of equality and equal access to opportunities or anything that threatens their own advantages. But like Cheney, he makes no pretenses about being anything other than a collection of the worst traits bred into humans from our inception as a species - beyond simple greed and avarice to an actual love of injustice and cruelty and delight at rewarding destructive and sociopathic behavior. I wish him a slow and painful death for all the pain he's causing millions of people - or at least wishes on millions of people - which may at least teach him some empathy that he utterly lacks at this point in time, and after his death, a slow and painful reconciliation of his poisoned soul with any benevolent force that may exist hereafter.
