Special Ed teacher shot, killed at Tacoma school
Source: http://www.seattlepi.com/local/415930_teacher26.html

TACOMA -- A female teacher was shot and killed at Birney Elementary school Friday morning.

The shooting happened outside the schoole at 1202 S. 76th St. just before 8 a.m., which was before students arrived for the day.

Mark Fulghum with Tacoma police says the shooter and the victim knew each other, and the shooting was domestic-violence related.

The Tacoma School District would only say the teacher was a special-education teacher.

After the shooting, the gunman fled, but Pierce County Sheriff's deputies tracked him down at 166th and Canyon Road East. Fulghum says shots were fired and the suspect was in custody.

2. I'm surprised the killer didn't commit suicide.
That's pretty common in these situations.

5. Unfortunately, there's a long history..
.. of jilted lovers, spurned suitors, crazy ex-es, and general domestic squabbles resulting in killings at schools.

8. Danged if I know
I don't know if schools as workplaces are the scene of more killings, or if the nature of schools makes them more sensational to the news media.

with a chip or an ankle beeper. Too many people getting killed this way. :(

kids are safer in schools than they are in the home, for instance, if you want to talk risk of death or serious injury

7. I'm starting to think that if someone has a protection order put on him
he should wear an ankle bracelet electronically keyed to another the other person also wears - whenever he gets withing 500 yds of that person the thing goes off like a fucking fire truck siren.

Maybe THAT would enforce the order.

29. Problem with that is
that every divorce in my state includes a "protection from abuse" order, even if there is no history of violence. Also, as it is now, with really no consequence other than being disqualified to own a gun and being required to maintain a reasonable distance from the petitioner/complainant, judges are relatively likely to issue an order in the interest of erring on the side of caution. If the penalty were more of a burden or punishment, judges would be much, much less likely to issue the order without some sort of evidence of abuse, IMHO. Now making it mandatory for convicted DA offenders, that might be good.

37. No, the problem is that a piece of paper by itself does NOTHING
to change anyone's behavior. What is the really absurd statistic? Something like 80% of domestic violence killings were committed by people who had "protection" orders on them?

PROTECTION ORDERS DO NOT PROTECT.

39. Very true, neither do police
PROTECTION ORDERS DO NOT PROTECT.

Police are under no obligation to protect anyone either....bottom line is that we are all responsible for our own protection and we all live at risk.

10. People tire of hearing it repeated but here goes: 30,000+/- dead per year with guns.
That is a lot of grieving for families, and a lot of profit for gun and ammo sellers.
What a country.

12. Yet you have never been safer
violent crime, including gun crime, is at a historical low. Perception fueled by non-stop news 24/7 has trumped actual facts.

I blame Nancy Grace:)

16. It's A Damned Sight Different Than 50 Years Ago.

Whatever gun violence statistics you'd care to present, the weekly, even daily incidents of armed psychos turning up at U.S. schools is a recent phenomenon.

Perhaps the underlying reason you're seeing more is national, instant, sensational media coverage. Seeing more doesn't prove there actually are more, just that they're getting more attention (which does spur a feedback loop for those wanting 'fame'/'infamy'.)

20. Yet society in general is much less violent
For example, ask any AA in the deep South who was terrorized by the KKK during the Civil Rights movement.

School shootings have always been rare - that's why they are national news.

That's a pretty sorry state of affairs which of course, the gun proliferation crowd will never take any responsibility for.

11. Another abusive loser.
I hope he suffered as he died there on the pavement.

I hate these little losers who think that they own their girlfriend, like some sort of cattle, and when the girlfriend leaves them, they should be killed because "If I can't have them, nobody can!" What a bunch of cowards. Even more cowardly was the fact that this guy pulled a suicide by cop, making someone else kill him instead of doing it to himself. If only he had just shot himself. It would have been one less oxygen-waster in the world.

38. The teacher wasn't his girlfriend.
The guy was just infatuated with her, but she wasn't interested in him. He started stalking her, so she got a restraining order against him, and he was arrested when he violated the restraining order.
