AZ may criminalize presence of illegal immigrants
Source: AP

Over the past several years, immigration hard-liners at the Arizona Legislature persuaded their colleagues to criminalize the presence of illegal border-crossers in the state and ban soft immigration policies in police agencies — only to be thwarted by vetoes from a Democratic governor.

This year, their prospects have improved. A proposal to draw local police deeper into the fight against illegal immigration has momentum, and even opponents expect the new Republican governor to sign off on the changes.

Paul Senseman, spokesman for Republican Gov. Jan Brewer, said the governor doesn't comment on pending legislation but generally supports pragmatic immigration laws. Her predecessor, Janet Napolitano, a Democrat, vetoed similar proposals.

One element of the proposal would ban what anti-immigration groups call sanctuary polices — local rules that discourage or restrict officers from questioning immigrants. Supporters of the bill say the policies — enacted by cities — create areas of "sanctuary" for illegal immigrants. The bill would let any person file a lawsuit to challenge the polices. If a judge finds a city restricted enforcement, the city could face civil penalties of $1,000 to $5,000 for each day the policy remains in effect after the lawsuit is filed.

2. Flaneur may criminalize Arizona.
It probably deserves the death penalty just for Joe Arpaio alone. I won't even get into the clowns the good Arizona bourgeoisie keep sending to Washington.

9. Hey there are some of us in AZ who have tried to make a difference and almost did but thanks too
sluggishness of the state and national party we were creamed this last go around, when we could have won. Some candidares have run and almost won, without any support from the party. And it continues. Many of us warned them local elections were crtical but they didn't care.this is the result.

24. Eagles and the infamous ones, whose name I am blanking on.
but in Maricopa County at least, we have an excellent Board of Elections. I have worked for them several times and also participated in our mandated hand counts and they run a very tight ship. Folks are always looking for things but I feel they do a very good job.

26. Are they scanned ballots? How big is the audit?
Edited on Tue Mar-02-10 11:36 PM by EFerrari
And it's a good thing that people keep looking. At one point, our mayor was trying to force our board of supervisors to buy machines from Chicago that had failed all over Cook County (and that's why they were for sale!). lol

28. They are scanned. I think the hand recount varies. I am going to say like 6 precincts for a
Stae leg race. It is of course much larger for a statetwide race. I really don't remember. I remember both county chairs do a coin toss to determine who chooses the precincts. And we need equal numbers of democrats and republicans to do the counting. it seems like they need several hundred and we always have trouble finding Gopers and they sub Indies.

31. Problem before in Pima County
http://www.tucsonweekly.com/TheRange/archives/2010/02/12/election-integrity-deja-vu

It was also an attempt, however, to get a closer look at the RTA ballots — Risner and other election-integrity activists felt that based on how the ballots were counted, and other blips that came up in their review, the election could very well have been fixed. Crazy things surfaced — one of which was the fact that an elections department employee admitted he had purchased a crop scanner, which is an effective tool in changing election computer counts. The employee said he never used it during the election and just wanted to see if what he heard was true, and it was never proven he used it during the RTA. The Democrats started putting a lot of public pressure

on the state Attorney General’s Office to do an investigation, and that finally happened last year, when the AG’s office took the RTA ballots to Phoenix for an investigative count and declared no wrong-doing occurred.

Leave the Mexicans here. They love America. They work hard. As long as they aren't crooks, let them stay. Send the crooked Republicans to Mexico.

27. Let them go illegally
Mexico's laws towards illegal immigrants are downright draconian compared to ours.

It'll be fun.

On the other hand, they deport over twice as many illegals as we do every year, so the thugs would just end up back here.

Nevermind.

29. Why aren't the employers questioned by the police?
And BTW, AZ used to be part of Mexico. I know, I know, the US won that border war but does that mean in 2010 we have to treat Mexicans like shit?

30. A lot of illegals left AZ about a year ago, which actually caused me to get laid off
Quite a few illegals left because of the strict hiring laws that were passed here. Anyway the company that I worked for did business with apartment complexes and the apartment complexes were hurting because they suddenly had all these vacant apartments with no one moving into them. Some of the apartment complexes couldn't afford upgrades any longer, some quit paying their bills, and some even went completely under, so the company that I worked for had to start laying off people. Some of our competitors even went completely under.

Personally, I think the economy was better when we had more illegals here.
