NASHVILLE, Tenn. - A Nashville man says he and his 10-year-old daughter were victims of road rage Thursday afternoon, all because of a political bumper sticker on his car.

i just got a new car, but high on the list after my daughter's memorial sticker is the next DU bumpersticker. my memory's fuzzy, but i think i may have discovered DU from a bumper sticker on a little truck in Marina del Rey, CA.

I just joined here because I saw the front page and I had to make a comment. I also have an Obama bumper sticker and a yes we did sticker on my car. In the last 2 weeks I have been deliberately cut off by 2 vehicles on the highway and then flipped off as they got in front of me. One of the cut offs almost caused accident. I was also tailgated by some lunatic who was flipping me off as well. when I mentioned to my husband that I thought these incidents were related to my bumper sticker, he thought I was overreacting and that it wasn't the case. After seeing this incident on the nightly news and then on this blog, I know that it's true. It's pretty scary. Today I went grocery shopping and pulled into a spot next to a car with a "Kommander Obama" bumper sticker (or something like that) along with other crap on it. Good thing I noticed before I went into the store, I parked elsewhere. Pretty sad when it's come to this. and the fact that the republicans are basically saying that the left is fanning the flames is pretty lame. I really think the crazies have gone mainstream......

Since moving to Texas, I gave up my Darwin-Fish, and my political stickers.

There are just too many violent idiots with guns here (I did mention this is Texas), and I am often out late at night going to the hospital on-call & I just do not want to wind up one of their victims.

I had a peace symbol in my window and bumper stickers for Democracy Now and other nefarious socialist organizations.

That car was totalled when an old lady drove out in front of me in an intersection and my current car doesn't have any political stickers on it (unless you consider "The Dude Abides" a political statement).

One of the difficult lessons that Democratic members and people of the left-leaning persuasion are learning is that doing the "right thing" does not necessarily get rewarded with thanks from those who benefit. The extremists in the right-wing are too ignorant and so poorly controlled that they lash out it ways that cannot be predicted. The Repug "leadership" has unleashed untamed pitbulls on the masses and I put full blame of the negative consequences on their shoulders. These times are not pretty, but I do believe that we on left are finding a sort of solidarity with one another. As you mentioned, silence is not the answer in these situations. We must stay strong and committed as we continue to strive towards equality and justice for all.

Better to have your car keyed than to succumb to fear. But since HCR has been passed, you need to decide when your sign will come down. How about April Fools Day? Or Thomas Jefferson's birthday? Or perhaps the first year anniversary of the day the bill was signed by President Obama? :-)

This bullying and intimidation - the signs with threats, phone threats, bricks through windows, yelling and slurs, it is the minority trying to threaten and intimidate and frighten people into silence, in to giving the minority control. It is people who have no legitimate claim to authority trying to claim it in illegitimate ways. It is the classic tactic of bullies, trying to control others through fear and intimidation. And like all bullies they prey on easy targets - like somebody driving home with their kid in the car. The message is clear, be afraid to support progress, because some crazy might get you next. It pisses me off so badly.

They've always been here. The easy comparison to make is the Nazi brown shirts. Like them, these people are trying to use threats and force to bully their way. There are a lot more examples that are a lot closer to home - the citizen's councils, the lynchings, beatings, church bombings. If it is like it was in the past, there will be some who are more sophisticated in the use of aggression and threats - threatening jobs, mortgages, etc. But it is still bullying.

I was trying to think it through. It seems to me that by definition, this kind of action is one that belongs to conservatives - extremist conservatives, but conservatives. The intention is to frighten and silence, that serves to maintain things the way they are, which is a conservative point of view. This isn't the sort of violence of someone pushing for change, it is the sort of violence of someone pushing for no change.

He nearly caused a major accident over his stupidity, but fortunately, there was an empty turn lane that we were able to duck into.

One of the repubicon idiots that live on my client's road blocked my passage one day with his truck (small fuel-efficient car for me) and we had a little confrontation. He threatened me, my client and anyone else he could think of. I was not going to back down about the sticker, but since I was on my client's road and on client business, I felt obligated to offer to remove the sticker if he requested it. My client, a good liberal, essentially said, "Hell no. Keep it on."

I love my clients!

A man, nattily dressed in his nascar regalia, pulled behind me in a convenient store lot. Inside he came into my space and asked me how I liked 'that' Obama? He had seen my bumper stickers that are provocative on purpose. One Is AWOL Bush, another Veterans for Obama and so on. I said that he was doing a great job. He snickered and said that Obama was making us Socialist. I said it's about time and at least he hasn't started any illegal wars like war criminal bush boy. I am usually a gentle person but this ignorant bagger pissed me off. I ended up saying fuck you and your ignorant grasp of anything political. He went off in a snit to listen to anal cyst rush or something. Sorry I had to rant or blow up. How did Americans get so fucking stupid?

After Rush said just the other day to his listeners to "Get the Bastards" is it really any surprise that people who listen to this on a daily basis are starting to resort to violence.

First, there was this poll showing that a majority of Republicans hold extremist anti-Obama views (like Obama's a socialist etc.). Then after the healthcare vote come the vandalism to some Democratic Congress members' offices. And now some knucklehead sees a car with an Obama bumper sticker and rams it on sight and as a result might get convicted of felony endangerment. Of course being a felon = scarred for life even out of prison, with most companies unwilling to hire you. So after he gets out of prison Weisiger will be so frustrated about not being able to find a job that he'll blame everyone else but himself?

I have been shouted at because of my Obama/Biden sticker. I've gotten anything from "Fuck Obama" to "Obama sucks" to some idiot screaming some diatribe at me which must have expended pretty much his entire political thought in two sentences. The problem is they open their mouths before they see me and once realizing that I'm not the sort of guy you scream obscenities at, run for their lives.

What gets me is a lot of these people drive foreign cars which in and of itself is not bad, but when you purport to be such a "big American" why not drive American like I do? Oh I forgot, they would rather buy foreign because our cars are union made. Man these people are stupid.

This is what happens when you pump people up with fear and conspiracy bullshit for a full year and then set them off. Rush, Beck, Faux, et. al. are to blame for this outbreak of lunacy that has followed the passage of the health care bill, and I certainly hope the one or two responsible voices in the media make them own it.

I'm not scared of the teabaggers in general, but this is an unnerving trend. The rhetoric on the right wing needs to be toned down.

Every time they show the teabaggers, even on channels other than MSNBC, they always look like they're on the verge of going completely insane. It will really surprise me if somewhere down the line they don't do something to get people killed. I hope that's not the case. But the more I see of them the more it'd surprise me if it didn't happen.

It could be because many on the left are either pacifists or at the very least believe in using force and violence only in defensive situations. We assume that the opponents regard us as opponents as well and are open to debate, whereas they don't look at us as opponents but enemies. They also do not have, for the most part, the mental capabilities to debate any of the issues and rely on emotions to guide their beliefs. Beliefs that are shaped by authoritarian figures approved by their conservative oligarchy.

For the traitorous and criminal actions that decimated the economy and millions of lives, they and their supporters who smugly displayed their devotion with bumper stickers, T-shirts etc.. SHOULD have been run off the road, screamed at, humiliated.

But thats the rub. They are for the most part more prone to reactionary violence, and we are not. Both to a fault.

I don't know how we resolve this as the MSM tends to follow the violence and frames it as "passion".
The left just doesn't seem to have the same passion, and thus is wrongly framed as "not having anything to bitch about because they always get what they want" and "they have nothing to complain about". We are deemed passionless wimps.

I don't have a solution, just venting.

a few isolated incidents does not make a trend. These sorts of things have happened, at both ends of the political spectrum, for the history of politics. Let's not blow things out of proportion, that merely feeds the fire.

I had a "Don't Attack Iraq" sign in the back window of my car. I pulled into a parking lot and some shithead and his wife who were also parking yelled at me, "Don't attack Iraq? That bastard Saddam bombed us first!"

I said to him in a calm and reasonable voice, "Uh, sir, Saddam Hussein actually had nothing to do with 9/11, and if you really knew anything about the history of the Middle East in general or Iraq in particular, or about cultural relations between Sunnis, Shiites, Al Qaeda, and the Baath Party, you would understand just how misinformed you are. But tell me, sir: Are you really for war against Iraq?"

He said, "Goddamn right I am!"

So I said, "Well, sir, in that case, I hope you are the first fucker killed in it".

I wouldn't be surprized if he's a tea party member. They're racist. They hold up anti-obama signs hint at less than subtle racism, and you never hear about tea baggers distancing their selves from the bigots. I've seen pictures and footage of people holding pictures of Obama painted up to look like an african savage and whatnot, and you don't see anyone around them shocked or outraged at such signs. So I have every reason in the world to think that a lot of them are racist on some level. They're strongly nationalistic, and they never question subsidization of private industry. their perfect idea of a president is someone that will be a strongman to the rest of the world and people within the country They're fascists, and I don't think its an exaggeration or misuse of the word.

Drive-by violence of many kinds will continue until a strong symbolic message catches the public's imagination.

Unfortunately the finest opportunity slipped by without action...............What would the national rhetoric be today if the 2009 presidential inauguration ceremony has concluded with Obama saying "arrest those two"? People may be a bit less likely to try ramming his supporters off the road.
