Vegas Strip to go dark for Earth Hour
Source: Associated Press

The Las Vegas Strip in Nevada will go dark Saturday night as part of a project to highlight climate change.

The Strip is participating in the World Wildlife Fund's Earth Hour. At 8:30 p.m. local time Saturday nonessential lighting will go off.

In Vegas that means the beam that shines skyward from the Luxor and the "Welcome to Fabulous Las Vegas Nevada" sign will go dark. Several casinos in downtown Reno also are joining the effort.

The World Wildlife Fund says more than 3,500 cities in 125 countries are participating in the event. All 50 states in the U.S. also are taking part.

10. Great. One day a year they pretend they care. I have never seen more plastic bottles tossed on the
street than I have in downtown vegas. The town is in the dark ages when it comes to caring about recycling or reducing one's carbon footprint.

13. Indeed... this city is the biggest waste of energy on the planet...
They have about a billion light bulbs burning non-stop 7x24x365. One hour off means nothing.. they will probably use the opportunity to replace the ones burned out.

4. This is kinda of cool. I sent a message to whitehouse.gov
asking if some of the buildings in DC could participate in this, since I didn't see anything on the link to the website, that indicates they would be participating.

Obviously, they wouldn't be able to shut of security lighting, but I thought some of the aesthetic lighting could be shut off.

11. "How many Republicans does it take to screw in a lightbulb?"
I thought they preferred to outsource the screwing-in of light bulbs to foreign companies who "competed" for no-bid-plus contracts... That way they "saved" money by charging the American tax-payer "only" $60 a bulb, after making sure that $60 was unburdened by "frivolous" taxes and "unnecessary" regulations, of course...

14. Why am I seeing an Ocean's Eleven-type movie in my head?
LOL. Maybe when they do Ocean's 17 or so they could use this gimmick, lol.

Really though, it is just a gimmick, aside from the opportunity for star-gazing (good call!). It's just a gimmick that 125 countries are participating in.
