March 20 (Bloomberg) -- Taiwan's President Chen Shui- bian pulled slightly ahead of Nationalist Party challenger Lien Chan with more than 12 million votes counted, according to unofficial figures broadcast by Taipei-based television broadcaster TVBS in Taipei.
Chen had 6.33 million votes, and Lien had 6.28 million, TVBS said. The lead has switched several times between the two candidates since the polls closed at 4 p.m.
There are 16.5 million registered voters in Taiwan. Formosa TV predicted record turnout, exceeding the 83 percent of voters who cast ballots in 2000. The Election Commission hasn't released turnout figures.
The election came 24 hours after Chen was grazed by gunfire while campaigning. The president sustained a flesh wound in the abdomen, and his running mate Vice President Annette Lu was grazed in the knee.
