Chen Shui-bian wins Taiwan election

TAIPEI, Taiwan: Taiwanese President Chen Shui-bian won a tight election on Saturday, his party said, boosted by a historic referendum about rival China's military threat that energized his supporters but rankled Beijing.

Fireworks boomed in the night sky as ruling party lawmaker Hsiao Bi-khim told supporters at Chen's headquarters, "We've proved to the world that we've won. Today's victory is a victory for democracy and a victory for Asia.''

1. Taiwan poll ends in dispute drama
President Chen Shui-bian narrowly won re-election, his party says, hours after he suffered a minor bullet wound in his stomach.

But as party celebrations broke out, challenger Lien Chan demanded that the results be declared null and void.

He said there were unanswered questions about the shooting incident, and the election had been unfair.

Unofficial results quoted by local media suggest Mr Chen beat Mr Lien by only about 50,000 votes - less than 0.5% of the ballots cast.
