US Leading Economic Index Hits Record High in March
Source: CNBC/Reuters

A gauge of the U.S. economy's prospects rose more strongly than expected to a record high in March, pointing to a steady economic recovery, a private research group said Monday.

The Conference Board said its index of leading economic indicators increased 1.4 percent, rising for the 12th straight month, after an upwardly revised 0.4 percent gain in February.

Analysts polled by Reuters had expected a 1.0 percent rise in March from a previously reported 0.1 percent gain.

"The indicators point to a slow recovery that should continue over the next few months. The leading, coincident and lagging series are rising.

Strength in demand remains the big question going forward," said Ken Goldstein, an economist at the Conference Board.

5. Yep, it's all Obama's fault.
What kind of a president brings us from the brink of the Great Republican Depression II anyway?

13. If the LEI's were bad we would never hear the end of it from DU's Doom and Gloom brigade
But when it's GOOD news, they will just denounce it as fake and not real.

9. Absolutely
Stimulus has to go until we reach the point in the business cycle where we have a sustainable recovery. The question is whether the greedy bastards who work so hard to undermine the middle class for the benefit of the top 1%ers will allow us to reach that point in the business cycle.

19. Where will those jobs come from?
You can't keep "stimulating" the economy with money printed by the government and backed by nothing.

Trying to reinflated the bubble economy will only delay the inevitable agony.

7. What's often forgotten here is that a large majority of people are gainfully employed
Even with a combined under/unemployment rate of 20%, that still leaves a large majority of people who are gainfully employed. When those folks in the latter category feel more confident about the economy they spend more and take more risks. Although it is also true that unemployment is the last indicator to recover.

20. Yes, a majority of working people were employed during the Depression...
Cheerleading this clusterfuck of an economy because "our team" has the ball will not build a solid economy. We need drastic changes in the way we do business. I don't see that. I see refusal to face the fact that you cannot be a strong nation if 30% of your gdp is created by bank fees and credit card interest run by people whose only interest is in getting fabulously wealthy by skimming the profits.

After all Those people DON'T COUNT - because (all together now - in three part harmony)

Everyone else is working and they've GOT THEIRS.

Yeah -- great American compassion here! Yeah -- doesn't it make you proud when the unemployed can be marginalized and trivialized so easily? :sarcasm:

16. Well, I don't know, I remain skeptical about our future, there is much still to be done.
But it is silly to get impatient, to wallow in gloom, and to blame Obama for everything. The ship of state is steered slowly when it is steered at all, President Obama has done much that is right, and there are good reasons to hope that he will do more as time goes on.

22. This is more important than current polls.
If the economic recovery continues like this into November, we'll retain control of Congress.
