Source: Syracuse Post Standard

Albany, NY — A new poll says New York supporters of the tea party movement are overwhelmingly Republican and conservative, and more likely to be from Upstate.

The Siena College poll released today says 19 percent of New Yorkers consider themselves supporters of the movement, while 25 percent say they’re opponents and 46 percent say they neither support nor oppose it.

3. that's true, but....
the media makes them out to be this driving political force, instead of basically clueless, willfully ignorant and misinformed, hard-right Republicans.

right outside of Rochester. It depresses me to see what has happened there and Buffalo.

5. WARNING!
Do not watch the video at the link. Doing so subjects you to sounds that I can only describe as what it must sound like to hear baby seals crying as they are bludgeoned to death.

16. Not all upstate is republican and conservative!
Our mayor is a Democrat. Our County Exec is republican. Our congressman is a Democrat as are our Senators (and for what it's worth, our governor). Plus, Ithaca is up here, you can hardly call that a republican territory. Yes, we have a lot of teabagging crazies but they mostly post ignorant rants on the newspaper website's comments section. It doesn't help that both local talk stations play turdblossom, insanity, and dreck all day. Although my husband's union is full of the self-hating types who really, deep down, don't believe they deserve their union benefits ... or is that no one else besides them deserve it?

Anyway, yes, there are many teabag groups on meet up but we have also had the Syracuse Peace Council and Westcott Nation that was here long before them and will continue to be long after them. This area was also significant for abolitionists and figured prominently in the Underground Railroad, Women's Rights-- Seneca Falls, and was a birthplace of progressive groups and movements. We have just been economically bled slowly over the last few decades and I believe that people are angry and frustrated because of it. The boom years never really came here. Utica, Syracuse, Gloversville, Rochester, Rome, Buffalo-- all along the Erie Canal-- we have been losing jobs, industry and people.

17. Grew up in the Westcott Nation
I now live in seriously northern NY but there are Dems/progressives here just very far and few. We all need to work hard to keep Bill Owens in the 23rd seat. He voted for HCR and they want to hang him for it now but they may see the light eventually.
