90-year-old vet finally receives medals from World War II

LAFAYETTE, Ind. -- A 90-year-old World War II veteran from Indiana has finally received the service medals he earned more than six decades ago during his service in war-torn Europe.

Rolland Penix received six service medals Saturday during a luncheon at the Lafayette Country Club that also celebrated his 90th birthday.
Penix rose to Army first sergeant while serving in three major campaigns -- in France, Belgium and Germany -- during the war.

But due to an oversight, he never received his World War II Victory Medal, the American Expeditionary Force Medal, the Good Conduct Medal and three European Campaign medals.

Republican state Sen. Ron Alting of Lafayette helped arrange for the medals after Penix's son, Chuck, told him at a public meeting that his father had never received his WWII medals.

4. K&R!

My dad got screwed out of a medal he should have got for W.W.II in the Pacific. He died May 7, 1994. I found out in the summer 2000. Congressman (R) Lee Terry wouldn't help.
