Senior Iranian cleric blames earthquakes on promiscuous women
Source: USA Today/AP

A senior Iranian cleric blames earthquakes on women who wear immodest clothing and behave promiscuously, the Associated Press reports.

"Many women who do not dress modestly ... lead young men astray, corrupt their chastity and spread adultery in society, which (consequently) increases earthquakes," Hojatoleslam Kazem Sedighi, Tehran's acting Friday prayer leader, was quoted by Iranian media as saying.

Laws in the Islamic Republic require women to cover from head to toe, but many, especially the young, ignore some of the more strict codes and wear tight coats and scarves pulled back that show much of the hair, the AP notes.

"What can we do to avoid being buried under the rubble?" Sedighi asked during a prayer sermon Friday. "There is no other solution but to take refuge in religion and to adapt our lives to Islam's moral codes."

19. No, most people there are remarkably sane
and wish someone would poison all the rabid clerics so that the reasonable people could take over for a change.

The problem there, as here, is that the minority is both noisy and violent, and that keeps the majority quiet and cowed.

52. it's actually considerably more complicated than that.
Those "rabid clerics" are the de facto law of the land. When Sharia law trumps constitutional law and Sharia law isn't even centralized but issued in the form of Fatwa by any local cleric, and every local cleric, in a paternal society, you can't possibly avoid superstition, atavism, and misogynistic declarations.

I know we can't generalize to everyone, but the structure of that religion is what opens the rose garden to weeds, and it always will.

If those "reasonable" people want change, they need to separate mosque from state.

55. What do you think the riots last year were all about?
The youth, the majority in the country who weren't around for the revolution 32 years ago, want secularization. They want it badly enough to get out into the streets and risk beatings, imprisonment, and execution.

It's not over, either. As the old guard continues to die off, another revolution is inevitable. Its seeds were sown last year.

60. wait Warpy you always do this to me.
I don't even have a wife to beat, mkay, so yes I have stopped beating my wife, that I never had. Oy to the vay chica!

I was criticizing the conservative asswipes that made the original pronouncement and now you have me attacking all Iranians everywhere by implication.

Anyway, spousal beatings apart, I agree. In nearly every conservative regime it is youth and hope that overcome age and treacherous conservatism, eventually, and not always by revolution so much as by evolution. Unfortunately before the pendulum gets enough momentum to keep going, conservative governments are innately threatened by liberalism, and generally also escalates the extremity of measures it will take against those perceived threats.

Before you have me changing spouses and picking up the whip again, I'm not a bigot when it comes to religion. I don't like any of it but some forms I like less, and the general rule is if the law of faith trumps secular law and human rights, I don't like it, and quite frankly I don't have to like it. In practice that makes Wahabi and other conservative sects and teachings not worthy of tolerance and respect from me, regardless of how noble any other ideas in it are. Human rights come first. Covering up "your" women (even the phrase is patronizing and degrading), hanging gay teenagers, executing sorcerer horoscope readers - all those superstitions and reproductive control amount to refusing to recognize human rights at a fundamental level, and relying on superstition and interpretation to enforce atavistic tribal law. I don't like it. Even after only 800 years of Islam they should be further along in the provinces or closer to forming a central tenet that supports and honors human rights and personal choice.

61. I just reviewed my post
and it was a rather mild one, pointing out the obvious about Iran, and contained no mention of spouse flogging.

Perhaps a few minutes of calm reflection should have preceded yours.

As for the clerics in control now, no one doubts their sheer viciousness against anything they suspect of being feminine, including gays. It's one reason the youth are rebelling to the point of risking their lives.

30. More threats to convince?
Edited on Mon Apr-19-10 05:10 PM by 4saken
This is a common tactic of asserting a causal link in an attempt to substantiate a previously asserted claim. In this case he is trying to substantiate the claim that the Quran gives good advice regarding current society(specifically the need for women to cover head to toe) by asserting that not covering up causes earthquakes. Earthquakes being feared, makes them a great source of emotion appeal. Yet another almost expected example of an Abrahamic religion using threats in their attempts to convince.

When will they understand that to many people this type of tactic is blatantly obvious and just gives less reason to accept the other claims they make.

Step out of the dark ages and stop informing your actions with mythology.
