LA mayor calls for 750 layoffs to close budget gap

Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa is proposing laying off some 750 city employees to help close a projected $485 million budget shortfall.

The layoffs would start July 1 and follow 105 pink slips issued this fiscal year.

Villaraigosa plans to release the budget for the next fiscal year on Tuesday. The proposal also includes the early retirement of 2,400 employees and transfer of 400 employees to semi-autonomous city agencies, including the airport and port.

The City Council must approve the budget and any personnel actions.
