Gunman opens fire at Tenn. hospital; kills 1, self
Source: Associated Press

The Knoxville police chief says one woman has died and two others are injured after a gunman opened fire outside a hospital and then committed suicide.

Chief Sterling Owen IV said three people, all women and all current or former employees of Parkwest Medical Center, were shot in the attack at about 4:30 p.m. Monday.

Owen says the suspect then shot himself to death. Police are still investigating for a motive but don't believe the shooter worked at the hospital.

Police didn't release the names of those shot because the families haven't yet been notified.

9. My car is a great tool to use to kill people when I am all banged up drunk
but I dont drink and drive. Do you? If I did, is the alcohol manufacturer responsible for the act? Nor did I shoot anyone in a hospital. Move on, find a new issue. This one died when newt was elected.

Uggh.

Terrible loss for the families involved.

14. So, onehandle, you tell me.. why does an object's intended purpose matter when talking about..
..public safety? Is there some moral turpitude you'd like to attach to them?

Or should the _means_ of causing death be more important / relevant than what an object is designed for? Should we not compare the relative usage of a particular object in good / bad situations and compare that to other means of achieving the same purpose?

After all, diesel fuel is designed to power engines, and fertilizer is designed to grow crops.

29. That's what I suspect.
Tonight officials said they didn't know of any relationship among the victims and the shooter, but I'll be very suprised if there wasn't one. It just doesn't seem like something random. The woman who was killed was a nurse, but I haven't heard if the other two are. I live in Knoxville, and this was the big story today, of course.

13. Is Knoxville cursed? The level of violence there is disproportionate.
I think we had a discussion about this when the madman opened fire in the Unitarian Fellowship Hall.

My sister and her family live there and I hear ongoing stories of overdoses of kids from all walks of life from heroin, murders, rapes, incest, you name it. Granted, she's a social worker, but it seems like that city has had more than its share of violence.

The victims' names have been released. The two women in the hospital are expected to survive. The gunman's name hasn't been released because police are having trouble finding his next of kin.

30. UPDATE: It turns out he was just seriously mentally ill.
He had an appendectomy at that hospital a few years ago and became convinced the doctors had implanted something at that time that let them track him. The three victims were just in the wrong place at the wrong time.
