They seemed normal but plotted to kill thousands (right-wing terrorists)
Paul Harris reports from Noonday, Texas, on how the FBI stumbled upon right-wing cyanide bombers

William Krar and Judith Bruey appeared a perfectly normal couple. Certainly Teresa Staples thought so. She remembered a polite, sociable couple who always paid their rent on time for the three garages they rented from her.

So when the FBI showed up in the tiny Texas hamlet of Noonday demanding access to the garages, Staples thought they had made a mistake. But a few hours later, more FBI agents turned up, this time wearing biochemical warfare suits. 'When those guys showed up in spacesuits, I just knew something very bad had been found,' Staples said.

She was right. Among a terrifying arsenal of guns, bullets and bombs, the FBI found a chemical cyanide bomb. Used in a shopping mall, a stadium or a subway, it could have killed thousands. 'I was terrified. I live here with my children and they had that terrible stuff in there,' Staples said.

Krar and Bruey will soon be sentenced to lengthy jail terms, but their capture has revealed a gaping hole in America's war on terror: the home front. The FBI fears that other chemical bombs, built by Krar, may already be in circulation. The case has now sparked the biggest domestic terror investigation since the Oklahoma City bombing in 1995.

3. The biggest domestic terror investigation since Okalahoma City?
What about 9-11? What about the anthrax mailer?

Oh, yeah, that's right--those events did not warrant a big domestic investigation :dunce:

6. My favorite part of the article
"No one knows why the pair chose to live in Texas, but the area is home to cells of the Ku Klux Klan and white power group the Ayran Nations."

Hmm, I wonder why they would live there?

17. I've met hispanics from Texas that sound like they're white Aryans.
It's bad enough to be a Clarence Thomas, but it is possible for someone to go further and actually hate their own ethnic group as much as an Aryan would. Pretty scary when you meet them.

7. Is it possible that an attack by Americans, such as these Far-rightists
could be misconstrued by a RW president who might say the work of said far-rightists was really the work of Al qaida?

10. Probably. But I'm being paranoid and oblique.
What I'm saying is if someone (it's crazy) felt another terrorist attack would help their chances in the way 9-11 helped them before, well... but presidents do not do such things.

The attack on Democrats was with the Anthrax. Ricin is not as dangerous, I am given to understand.

was someone trying to be able to say both Dem's and R's were equally threatened by sending the Ricin? Are Anthrax and Ricin equal threats?

I know the Anthrax attackers tried crudely to pretend they were radical Islamists. I don't remember what the story with the Ricin was.

12. I don't believe that the "attack" on Frist was Ricin, as originally
stated. Probably a diversionary action to take the focus off the Republicans stealing Democratic documents from the House Judiciary Committee.

18. It certainly would be one way to get their hands on all that public land
wouldn't it? And who in our country is itching to privatize public lands? Therein lies the enemy within.

I've never seen it discussed. Do they not want it to get out how easy it is to build something like this?

After all, the terrorists are from here.

20. All of a sudden I'm glad I don't live in Texas
No one knows why the pair chose to live in Texas, but the area is home to cells of the Ku Klux Klan and white power group the Ayran Nations.

One theory is that Krar had been acting as a travelling salesmen of covert weapons for extremists. But the nightmare scenario is that Krar has already made and distributed other chemical bombs. More sodium cyanide was found at Krar's house and in his car in Tennessee.

If true, that would be a breakthrough in the war on terror as big as anything gleaned from al-Qaeda suspects in Iraq or Afghanistan. 'Krar had weapons that were capable of killing just as many people as died on September 11,' said Mark Potok, editor of The Intelligence Report, an SPLC newsletter. 'They are a reminder that all terrorists do not come from abroad. Some of the scariest ones are 100 per cent, red-blooded Americans.'

21. Krar's story isn't new
I've been hearing about Krar and his ambitions to kill many innocent people for a while. What also isn't new is the fact that while Ashcroft celebrates and says the patriot act and the other infringements on our civil liberties are working because we've captured the brother of a guy who might know the uncle of a terrorist, he doesn't make any big celebration about Krar's arrest. What is up with that?
I don't think we should expect a big show of praise from Ashcroft for the homegrown terrorists who have been caught. Since 9/11, we have arrested several terrorists who were about to kill innocent people or already have. Do you guys know if Ashcroft or anyone else said anything about the capture of Eric Rudolph, Stephen John Jordi, or this most recent one, William Krar?
