(UK's) Iraq war chest 'will be empty by July'

By Francis Elliott, Deputy Political Editor
21 March 2004

A war chest of £3.8bn for military operations in Iraq is set to run out within three months, official figures released last week indicate.

Defence economists estimate that keeping British troops in the country is costing taxpayers up to £125m a month.

However, figures released at the same time as the Budget show the special contingency reserve for Iraq has just £300m left to pay for operations in the coming financial year.

1. Just in - Bush* to grant UK 10B to assist US in War effort.
not really, but count on Bush doing something as asinine. He'll print more money to give to the UK to give back to us so they can "show" their support. :puke:

2. No wonder BushCo has a hardon to turn over power by June
Cause they know that their #1 sidekick won't be able to stick around after that.

3. Yup, it's always about money, isn't it?
That's quite amazing, if you think about it. Here we have the first official 'cancellation' by Spain this week. Bush and his evil minions shifted into high gear to prevent any defections from the 'Coalition of the Highly Coerced'.

In the meantime, the UK is rapidly running out of funds, so they will have to back out within three months anyway. Which the Bush's must be aware of.

So they will have other defectors, without any doubt. I wonder how the funding is holding up for the other coalition members. Maybe they are running out of money too.

This makes me really wonder about the soundness of this whole adventure. They must have known this! These guys are worse than the grown-up men who stand at the dog track on Saturdays and Sundays.

You just know they've just squandered their rent money, and now they're frantically trying to "make up for lost time". Fools.

5. Mr. Blair could raise taxes to pay for his Adventure?
Why not !!!!

I'm sure the people could be "scared" into approving this.

6. Currently it's borrowing...
...and stealth taxes. However, Blair's stealth tax ideas have resulted in this campaign which I think could play a decent sized part in gthe next election.

http://www.isitfair.co.uk/

The IsItFair campaign is NATIONWIDE, NON-PARTY POLITICAL and FOR EVERYONE (not only pensioners) who wants the existing system of Council Tax abolished.

If you have been outraged by the relentless, year on year, inflation-busting increases in Council Tax, then this is YOUR CAMPAIGN. Please support it in whatever way you can.

The average rise for 2003/2004 was 12.9 per cent and was a direct result of central Government action. It is set to continue. Government is using the council tax system as a stealth tax. Grants have been redistributed away from many areas. At the same time, Government has dictated that spending in these same areas is significantly increased. On average, the cost of council tax has increased by up to 70% since 1997. The forecasts for next year's rises are already being reported at 10%. Central Government blames the local county councils for all the extortionate rises. Do not believe this. Check with your own county council and you will discover the truth.

Our aims are to make people aware of the need for action and to have the existing property-value-based council tax replaced by a system that takes account of the ability to pay. People power will achieve this.
