Iraq pullout all but inevitable for Zapatero

05:47, Mar 21 2004

Spain's withdrawal from Iraq is all but inevitable, Prime Minister-elect Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero has said in an interview, after Spanish protesters sent him a stark message to bring troops home.

Zapatero, whose Socialists ousted the centre-right government in a shock election victory a week ago, has vowed to stand by his pre-election pledge to withdraw 1,300 troops from Iraq, unless the United Nations takes control by mid-year.

1. I can guarantee interesting times coming up.
I never make predictions, but I can guarantee that Bush and his co-dependent cohorts will be desperate when this becomes a fact.

There will be so much frantic activity behind the scenes and the phone lines will be ringing off the hook for poor Senor Zapatero. They will offer him millions, no billions to keep the facade up.

Because once they pull out, the house of cards will fall (my humble prediction).

5. I wouldn't be so optimistic
Bush will continue to spend like we never have to pay for it and after the election, (if he somehow manages to trick enough people into voting for him), he will reinstate the draft and we will be able to handle Iraq ourselves. At least until the cameras aren't looking and we let them setup an Islamic theocracy. We'll put up a few bases and bribe a few officials, which is sure to piss off Al Queda but then what else is new, and ignore the coming ethnic purges when the Shiites get revenge. Sure, someone will have to pay for all these problems one day, it just, as usual, won't be Bush.

3. That's what I said

Very strange that Kerry felt a need to “call” on Zapatero to “reconsider” - when they're aiming at pretty much the same: get the UN in... I still don‘t understand it.

4. Way to go, Zapatero!
He made a promise to the Spanish people, who were overwhelmingly against Operation Occupation, and is keeping that promise. A brave man doing the right thing - it's a nice sight to behold.
