Prosecutor will ask for a new trial in police brutality case




Los Angeles-AP -- The prosecutor in Los Angeles County says it's important to the community that a jury judge the actions of a policeman videotaped punching and slamming a handcuffed teenager onto a squad car.

Steve Cooley says the community's already set a "national example of restraint and good citizenship" in the case, and prosecutors need to do their part. He'll ask a judge to schedule a new trial within 60 days.

LOS ANGELES, July 30 — Prosecutors said Wednesday that they will retry a white former Inglewood police officer accused of slamming a black teenager onto a squad car during a videotaped arrest last summer, saying the case must be resolved for the community's sake.
